don't sell your baitcaster. Just buy a bulk spool of cheap monofilament line around 6lb test and practice in your backyard with it. Take your time and don't rush it. Put a bucket about 20 feet away and try to hit it. Eventually you will be able to land INSIDE the bucket every time with no backlashes. Move the bucket about 40 feet away and keep at it.
Once you learn to use a baitcating reel you will love the accuracy you can achieve with it that is not possible with any other type of reel.
You can get a decent low priced spinning rod/reel combo at walmart for 20-30 bucks and use it for fishing while you practice at home with your baitcaster.
Trust me once you master a baitcaster you will be glad you took the time and effort.[

Edited for some tips:
Be sure to
spool your line on your baitcaster tightly. It can't be just reeled on loose, that will cause backlashes.
Make sure you
set the tension right on it. Put on a WEIGHT and loosen the tension knob (just below the crank and drag) then press the release button. Now tighten the tension until the lure you have is falling at a slow steady pace and when it hits the floor the spool doesn't keep turning it stops. Then go practice casting.
Use a WIEGHT about 1/2 to 3/4 oz when your learning and don 't try to cast it a long way at first. don't try to learn using a lure... a weight has no hooks is is solid so it doesn't have as much wind drag.
Don't make overhead casts while learning! Make short side armed casts and just try to throw it 10 to 20 feet to start off with. The reason for this is, when the lure is cast overhead when it reaches its highest point it slows down and the spool keeps turning and BACKLASH. With a short side arm cast this doesn't happen nearly as often.
take your lure (after you have setup the tension and drag) and hook it something and let the line spool off as you walk away about 20 foot. Now put a piece of electrical tape or duct tape across the line at that point. Reel in the line. Now if you backlass it won't go past that 20 foot mark where the tape is and you can practice getting those small backlashes out without all the pain of 20 or 30 yards of line looped up.
Try these tricks and after a week or two you'll be more confident with using your baitcaster.
Just don't give up!
