BaitCasting Reel Help - Edgy779 - 04-29-2011

Just got a new baitcasting reel, its a huge learning curve form a closed spool reel. i have already tangled it, any tips of how to not tangle it. I have read "thumbing the spool" helps and stuff but I just need some other input

if you did not throw away the destructions. lol's in them should be tuning your reel like you tighten this knob till a certin weight lure just slowly falls to the floor out of the guides. i had to do this for my pen ocean reels i am sure you got the same problem with back lash as they described in tuneing the reel. then after it is tuned it is just thumbing as you cast it lightly.

hey Edgy,
Learning to use a baitcaster is a learning experience... Hold your bait out of the water, click the release and turn the tension knob until the bait stops falling. Cast high enough to see the bait flying, when the bait hits the water thumb the spool to a stop... if you get backlash mess with the magnet control knob... Practice practice, don't give up, before you know it you will be able to whip a lure into spots you wouldn't be able to hit with any other kind of reel. Good luck! I have caught some of my biggest bass trying to straighten up a backlash! LBD

You will get it man... Once you do, you will know what I am talking about. I can whip a lure a LONG ways, and accurate! Man there is nothing like it, once you get the hang...

LOL practicing clearing backlashes is a BIG part of learning to cast a baicast, that is for sure!
Dont forget when you get a good backlash going, make sure to watch your line in the water, I aint BSing ya that is right when the big ones usually hit!!!
Sometimes even still I don't backlash ever, but will cast and then let the crank sit a minute and start cussing like crazy about an imaginary backlash... The fish will slam it thinking I am busy!!! Works like a charm![Wink]

Re: [daffy] BaitCasting Reel Help - Edgy779 - 05-02-2011

Sold my baitcast reel, decided that I am too new to fishing i want to learn more about fishing in general before i try anything else, are spinning rods any easier or do they backlash just as much as baitcasting reels?

No no no no no... A spincast is throw and go! I use a spincast all the time for my plastics and like spinners - spoons, anything lighter will throw so much easier! Don't give your baitcast away! I use both all the time!

spinning is very easy to get the hang of. bait casting should never have been your first reel cause of the harder learning curve. but is one of the most use reel for pike, musky, bass, etc ... if any thing see if you can hang on to the reel and get a cheap spinning reel like at walmart for $20 bucks i use the shimano ir4000r from meijers here in Michigan for fishing for king salmon. i think out the door it only cost 13-20 bucks depending on were you go. they have three different model in the ir series 2000r, 4000r, and 3000r. get one and a good ugly stick that fits your needs. the hole set up will cost about 40-50 bucks. more then likely the price of that bait casting reel or less for the hole set up.

don't sell your baitcaster. Just buy a bulk spool of cheap monofilament line around 6lb test and practice in your backyard with it. Take your time and don't rush it. Put a bucket about 20 feet away and try to hit it. Eventually you will be able to land INSIDE the bucket every time with no backlashes. Move the bucket about 40 feet away and keep at it.

Once you learn to use a baitcating reel you will love the accuracy you can achieve with it that is not possible with any other type of reel.

You can get a decent low priced spinning rod/reel combo at walmart for 20-30 bucks and use it for fishing while you practice at home with your baitcaster.

Trust me once you master a baitcaster you will be glad you took the time and effort.[Wink]

Edited for some tips:

Be sure to spool your line on your baitcaster tightly. It can't be just reeled on loose, that will cause backlashes.

Make sure you set the tension right on it. Put on a WEIGHT and loosen the tension knob (just below the crank and drag) then press the release button. Now tighten the tension until the lure you have is falling at a slow steady pace and when it hits the floor the spool doesn't keep turning it stops. Then go practice casting.

Use a WIEGHT about 1/2 to 3/4 oz when your learning and don 't try to cast it a long way at first. don't try to learn using a lure... a weight has no hooks is is solid so it doesn't have as much wind drag.

Don't make overhead casts while learning! Make short side armed casts and just try to throw it 10 to 20 feet to start off with. The reason for this is, when the lure is cast overhead when it reaches its highest point it slows down and the spool keeps turning and BACKLASH. With a short side arm cast this doesn't happen nearly as often.

take your lure (after you have setup the tension and drag) and hook it something and let the line spool off as you walk away about 20 foot. Now put a piece of electrical tape or duct tape across the line at that point. Reel in the line. Now if you backlass it won't go past that 20 foot mark where the tape is and you can practice getting those small backlashes out without all the pain of 20 or 30 yards of line looped up.

Try these tricks and after a week or two you'll be more confident with using your baitcaster.

Just don't give up!

My first reel was the closed spool one i forget what it is called, i have used that so much I can't fish anymore because the line has made grooves in the metal drum and it catches my line when I cast lol...

Re: [Edgy779] BaitCasting Reel Help - michfishgod - 05-05-2011

looks to be good i have had luck with the g.m. reels and rods use the reel to land a 15 pound coho salomon 6 pound test. there that good even though there less expencive there still just as good as higher end reel / rods. then you do not have to worry if you dip your reel or loose your rod bass fishing off a pier or off a boat etc...

You can buy the same or better outfit at Walmart or Kmart. Do some more research. Everybody has a $55 set. Stay with brand names ie Shimano, Quantum, or Ab Garica. Its the reel that counts. Rods all very in types and lenghts
