Flaming Gorge Kokanee Trip
#1
Fishing the Gorge for Kokes
The wife and I just returned from several days fishing for the kokanee at Flaming Gorge. The weather was just beautiful fishing the mornings for the kokanee. We were on the water about 630 each morning and off by 930 or 10. We fished the WY side launching out of Squaw Hollow. The kokes were pretty much all over. We were joined by good friends "Smoke On The Water" and his wife. We found the biggest kokes between 55 and 65 ft. as was stated last week by another BFT member. We ran squids behind various color RMT Bahama mamas trolling at 1.7 to 1.9 MPH. Several of the larger males were starting to turn to their spawning colors. Going to make for some good smoked fillets. The wife's kokanee measured just shy of 22 1/2 inches. That was her largest to date not sure what it would have wieghed, she had never had kokanee peel line off the reel like those big males did. We use to fish Anderson Ranch for the kokanee in the past but we never caught kokes like these. You can only keep 3 apiece but those 12 fillets will give us two good batches of smoked salmon.

Don't you ever make it over that way Mike? They are catching some over 5lbs. up there this year. The Utah state record still stands at an even 6lbs. caught back in 1995 at Strawberry, Todd is a guy I guided on the Desseret L&L several times. Curious if you ever make it down this way for the walleye I know you use to make a trip this way a time or two in the summer for the eyes.

I haven't fished the Gorge since I was in High School, back when I lived in Utah. Sure looks like I need to plan a trip back there though. Been a few years now since I've come down and fished Willard too. How's the walleye & wiper fishing been?

Headed back to Anderson next week for another round of those 12-13" kokanee [fishin]

Super hot the last 3 to 4 years. The bite started early this year about the begining of May (Not Counting Spawn in Mar. & April) and ran until about the end of June. You may need to check out the Utah site for some of the Kokes that are coming out of Strawberry/Soldier Creek this year. Recent post showed a picture of one that was 25 inches and close to the state record of 6 LBs. Nothing wrong with the 12-13 in. kokes out of Anderson The wife and I haven't been up there for a few years now as I heard they have been pretty small the last couple years. We still prefer the taste of the smaller ones fried VS the bigger Kokes.
