After hearing a few reports of people catching fish shallow and seeing tents set up close to shore, it has me thinking.
I fished the berry on saturday in 40 feet and had consistent bites throughout the day. But have also heard of success very shallow (4' - 8') and was wondering why would the fish move shallower with the more noise & pressure that occurs later in the year? Is it a time of day thing? Morning better than noon?
I caught a few fish on saturday just below the ice using my vexilar, but have had spotty success fishing less than 15 feet. It might just be a personal preference thing, but I would appreciate any input or advice. Thanks

The main reason I fish shallow on ice is to catch predatory fish that are cruising the shoreline structure or weed beds, hunting for bait fish.
Dams are a good place to do this, I've noticed, although it isn't always productive.
I've found that my odds of catching a bigger fish are a little better when I'm shallow on certain lakes like Strawberry or Currant Creek and a few others.

Saturday we were fishing Strawberry. My uncle was fishing in 8 fow with a finder, I was fishing 25 fow with no finder and I out fished him.
My theory is the fish are a little wiser in the shallower water so they are little more hesitant to bite. I like fishing a bit deeper to "cover my tracks".

+1. The best catching I have had is 20-23 feet of water and the fish are at 17-20 feet deep. There are a lot of fish in close, but the best catching is in the deeper water.

Fished Strawberry today at 4, 8, 11, 12, 24, and 30 fow. The biggest fish of the day was on a red side shiner at 4 feet, dang rules, it went back to grow another 1/4 inch.
