Striped Bass - Support your local reefs! Action has been closer to home this week with bass action good from Southwest Reef to Bartletts. Live or chunked bunker has been best. If your looking to do some simple bass fishing try chunked fresh bunker on Long Sand Shoal on the ebb tide. Bunker have been at the mouth of the Connecticut River but pickings have been tough some mornings, also more hickory shad mixed in than we've seen in a few years. Nights at the Race have been good with not too many reports on days coming in.
From shore it's still worthwhile at Saybrook Point and the DEP Piers, start thinking about nights.
Bluefish - Blues have been a bit harder to find this week except for the Race and Plum Gut.
Fluke - Fishers Island has had a couple good days this week, and the Misquamicut area has been consistently good for the last 2 weeks. We had a few good reports this week from the 30-50' water off Hammonasset. The 30' off Old Lyme and Waterford has also been decent but the ratio of shorts to keepers is rising like gas prices, ditto for Long Sand Shoal.
No reports from the Connecticut River, but I think it should improve this week as the water cleans up. Also noteworthy we've heard of more fluke being caught from shore this year.
The Tri-Shop Fluke Contest has started, call us 860-388-2283, Hillyers 860-443-7615 or the Fish Connection 860-885-1739 for details.
1st - Rich Reicherl - 10.70#
2nd - Mark Sharoyer - 10.50#
3rd - Sam Dibner - 9.95#
Porgies -Some better news this week from Hatchetts, Bartletts and the Brothers.
Blue Crabs - Reports have been a lot of shorts and a few keepers. It's going to take a few weeks for that to improve. Oyster and Connecticut Rivers have been the best bets.
Blackfish - Season opened this week but no reports yet. I suspect it should be worthwhile in shallower water, 8-20'.
