Quick Lake Mohave Trip 7/7
#1
Got a wild hair up my cheeks last night and hit up the old fishing buddy Bryan to camp Mohave last night for a mini fishing trip. We got to Cottonwood around midnight and launched to the first point on the left side--hooked up on of those beautiful cottonwood channel cats and called it a night not long after--I was told the next day by the marina clerk that the opposite side was swarmed with big cats [crazy]

Woke up at 8, started dissecting coves towards AZ bay--saw lots of fingerling smallies/largemouth and bluegills swarming the shallows, so I taking queues from bass boats jigging down 30 feet from shore. Jigged up a pounder smallie, then threw on a big white swimbait that I let drop to the bottom and slow brought back--had this big old boy suck it up--he made my trip a success, thought it was a big striper when I felt him fighting!

This was the last fish of the day, wish I spent more time!

Sweet bass. Must be pushing the 5lb mark or so. Far and few are bass like that around here. Congrats.

My wild guess... 20'ish miles from Willow to Cottonwood. I'd guess the river flows +/- 2mph. Even just floating and no paddling a one day'r. So planning wise I think it would more come down to how much time you want to spend camping, hiking, exploring, etc verse actual time to travel X distance.

Mojave Red, Willow Beach is mile marker 52, Cottonwood Cove is mile marker 24--so it would be 28 miles (give or take) to your destination! To give you an idea of how long it might take, I guide kayak trips from the Hoover Dam to Willow Beach (12 miles) in 8 hours during mild to moderate wind. In those 8 hours, there are a couple hours to hike and stop for lunch. I would say if you started your journey early and really committed some time to paddling and covering ground, you'd be able to stop and camp your first day more than half way to your destination--then finish in the second day. Just check the weather! North winds over 12 mph can slow you waaaay down. There are some cool things to see on the way down river btw that a lot of people miss, frogman petroglyph and a place called Queho's hideout are two interesting spots, look them up!

My buddy Alex and I used to cover a lot of water on our kayaks. We could cover ten to eleven miles in about 3 hours if we just put our heads down and paddled. I would say, if you are an experienced paddler, you could knock out 20 miles the first day and finish up the rest the following morning. It's going to take you quite a bit longer getting back to Willow though, factoring in the current.
