WHAT: The 2013 Walmart BFL season continues with four tournaments on Saturday, May 4. The Bama division holds its third tournament of the season on Lay Lake, the Bulldog division heads to Lake Sinclair, the Mountain division visits Lake Cumberland and the North Carolina division blasts off on Lake Wylie. Up to 400 boaters and co-anglers will be competing in each event for top awards up to $8,000 and $3,000 respectively.
WHEN: Saturday, May 4
WHERE: Bama Division
Lay Lake
Beeswax Landing
25779 Highway 145
Columbiana, Ala.
NOTES: Known for its largemouth and Coosa River spotted bass, Lay Lake contains large numbers of both. With the recent introduction of invasive aquatic vegetation such as Eurasian milfoil and hydrilla, thick and stringy weeds are now found growing all around the lake. Warming water brings greener weeds in April on Lay Lake and these oxygen-rich environments are the home of shallow-dwelling largemouth bass. These weeds provide security for most male and female bass in the shallows as they await a chance to bed. Spawning bass can be found along main-lake flats, flats in creeks and especially pockets and small cuts off the main lake. Expect weights of a winning weight near 20 pounds.
WHERE: Bulldog Division
Lake Sinclair
Little River Park
3069 North Columbia Street
Milledgeville, Ga.
NOTES: Lake Sinclair is lightly stained, down 1 1/2 feet from full pool and water temperatures are currently in the mid-60s. Reports indicate that bass fishing has been good lately as the bass are up shallow and aggressive. Anywhere from 8 feet deep to 6 inches has produced numbers of bass. A topwater bite can be found in the morning around shallow cover including docks, grass, stumps and points. Throughout the rest of the day other lures such as crankbaits and plastics have been effective. The water has warmed up to the point where the shad are now spawning. Look for limits approaching 20 pounds to do well here.
WHERE: Mountain Division
Lake Cumberland
Conley Bottom Resort
Route 5, Box 5360
Monticello, Ky.
NOTES: The lake level on Cumberland is still very low but rising with every spring rainfall. With the repairs finished on the dam, the lake is predicted to be back close to full pool by the end of 2013. Largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass all live in numbers here. Fishing on Lake Cumberland has been good lately, and reports state that the bass are being caught on multiple patterns. Sight-fishing and flipping brush could be solid patterns. Reports also state that the topwater bite has started to materialize.
WHERE: North Carolina Division
Lake Wylie
Buster Boyd's Landing
3998 Highway 49/Old Charlotte Highway
Lake Wylie, S.C.
NOTES: Lake Wylie is a smaller lake, measuring in at approximately 13,000 surface acres. Reports are stating that the lake's bass have starting spawning and they have made their migration away from the main lake and are concentrated in shallow staging and spawning areas. Jerkbaits, jigs, crankbaits, swimbaits and plastics have all been productive. The lake is loaded with boat docks, winding creeks, long points and underwater stump fields. With the abundance of cover, covering water may prove to be essential.
The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 120 tournaments throughout the season, five in each division. The top 40 boaters and co-anglers from each division qualify for a regional tournament and are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing - the Walmart BFL All-American presented by Chevy. The 2013 BFL All-American is being held June 27-29 on Nickajack Lake in Chattanooga, Tenn. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the EverStart Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.
