Panguitch Lake
#1
My wife and I spent the weekend up at Panguitch Lake in Utah, and had a great time! We stayed at the South Campgrounds and rented a pontoon boat from the Rocky Point Marina. We spent all day on the boat Saturday, about 12 hours in total.

The weather was beautiful in the morning, then a storm came in. It was raining sideways and then started hailing. Thunder and lightning was coming closer until it actually struck the lake. I'm not kidding you. I had never seen anything like it. The lightning struck about 100 yards in front of us. Meanwhile, the marina was trying to contact us via our walkie talkie to tell us to get in. The whole lake cleared and we were the last off. Thankfully, 45 minutes later we were able to hit the lake again. After the storm passed it was absolutely beautiful!

The fish were hitting on mainly chartreuse glitter power bait. My leaders were about 24 inches and we did the best in about 25 feet of water.

We started out trolling, but there were so many floating weeds that it was a painful process. Also, I must have had the wrong flasher/spoon combo, because on two of my poles, the leader was all twisted and bunched up (I will make another post on that).

In all, it was an awesome day. Picked up 12 fish, 5 were keepers. Largest was almost 4lbs and I nailed it on the first cast of a multi-colored Rooster Tail. It was an awesome feeling.

Awesome. Even though Panguitch north is a pinch more expensive to camp in it is worth it 100% IMO just for the paved roads and "nice" restrooms.

I see Utah is now on a 100% camp fire ban right now. Did that get you or did that go into effect after you left?

You really got into the Rainbows. 3 out of 4 (Maybe closer to 4 out of 5) when we were there were Cutthroats. The RB's certainly fight better and after cooking one of each my daughter thought the RB tasted just a pinch better to her. But I do think the Cutthroats are prettier/sleeker/cooler looking fish if one was just out to catch, release and enjoy.

You must have a swivel when using just about any lure or your line will get twisted bad. I use the more expensive swivels with bearings to help ensure line twist is at a minimum. My dad has commented on some of the lures he uses in Montana that he uses 2 swivels to help with line twist.
