Hi everyone,
I have posted a few times in the past but I figured I would post a quick (maybe not so quick, this may be a bit long) report from Sunday since it was a particularly good day.
I am by no means an expert or even advanced fisherman. And my boat, a 27' sport/wake boat, is not designed for fishing by any means but I fish off of it all the time anyway. I generally stick with cuts sardines and a Carolina rig and just kick back and relax.
I usually go out in the later afternoon up to dusk as I do not mind the heat this time of year and it seems to bring the best results.
Sunday was a typical day. Headed out to the 33 hole area and anchored along what I call the Wall at about 35-40 feet. Tons of bites, lots of small 1/2 pound or less stripers. Hard to get a good setting of the hook they were so small so a lot of bait stealing taking place. 8 fish on, 1-2 in the 1 pound range, rest smaller. Could have a ton more if I would have switched to smaller tackle and bait but its kinda fun trying to hook the small ones sometime
Around 6pm or so the boils started fast and furious and all over the area. Pulled the anchor and fired up the engine and proceeded to chase them around some, but again my boat is not designed for this and its hard to get close. Tried my luck, nothing with any top water lures.
Decided since the water level has come down quite a bit the last couple of months to try an old spot in the area I refer to as the Bump. And underwater bump where as of now it goes from 80' to 55'. Not a ridge, but a small hilltop I would call it.
Started dropping a line around 7 to around 60' and good action right away. 8 fish in the next 30 mins all around 2-3 pounds. Was starting to get late and bait was getting soft so figured a couple of more tries and head in. Next fish was a nice 5 pounder or so. One last one before I head in and wham, a beauty that was 36 inches long, I would say 12-15 pounds. A good 5-6 minute fight to get him in and wreaked havoc on my pole and reel. It ended up partially stripping the gears in my cheapo Shakespeare reel.
All in all a great day out. Hot as hell, but little to no wind that afternoon. And on Sunday around 5 or so the PWC crowd and the annoying wake boarders clear out so it was very relaxing.
It has taken a good 4 years to get a good feel what spots are good depending on what the water level is at. Although my personal honey hole has been dead since the big rise in water level last year. But its a better summer spot than winter and hopefully it comes back as the water goes down some the next couple of months.
Always catch and release and I knock the barbs off my hooks as well to make it easier to release.
Have some pics on my phone I need to put on my computer from the last few trips but a lot of times I go out alone and it is a bit hard to take pics. Will see if I can add some to this later today.
