Lake Mead (North End) 6-15-12
#1
We thought we would check out some new territory today and did ok I guess. We launched out of Echo and went south down towards the Virgin Basin and fished the east side back north towards echo. Not too many good spots in there. We found a couple with a decent amount of smallies that provided lots of fun but nothing to make me make that run again. Put over 50 miles on the boat messing around. We eventually ended up back up north of Echo hitting some spots here and there. Landed a little over 20 SMB and LMB. We also got into the Stripers pretty good (~5 miles south of Echo) just as the sun was coming up. Madi was catching them left and right with a Strike King 1/4oz lipless and I was on her heals catching them left and right on a Lucky Craft Sammy topwater. What a ball. Landed 15 or so of them.

Madi had her game hat on and ended up catching the biggest SMB (4" grub on a 1/4oz jig head) and biggest LMB (SK lipless) of the day. Plus I think she creamed me on the Stripers too... I did end up catching more bass by days end but that didn't count for much in her book. lol

We ended up with a coyote following us on the shore for hours and hours down there. I guess looking for a handout. He didn't get one.

I did go and buzz by Stewarts and not a chance of fishing that South tip that I said I would check out for those thinking of going up there to shore fish. There was people on every cove up there camping, etc. I won't fish anywhere someone else is. Especially people shore fishing. With the water on the lake going down and down those coves sure are smaller from the last time I was up in that area fishing. We did go several miles north of Stewarts on the west side and did well on the LMB. Areas one could get to in small boat/canoe.

Also I drove up the 15 and took the Valley of Fire road in. Fun road in the dark (NOT). lol Not any faster at all to get to Echo and it is 6-7 miles longer of a drive verse driving up Northshore road. It would be a pinch faster going to Stewarts but not worth 8 bucks plus the time one has to take to stop and fill out the envelope you are at a wash.

Since I was all the way down to the Virgin Basin I decided to go and see if we could find that B29 that has been there since 1948. I have hit up dozens and dozens of websites on this topic over the last few months and finally found one with a little tidbit on the general area it was at. Anyone that knows certainly don't like to tell...

Anyways some pics... I am sure I could of gotten some better angles on it if I wanted to mess around for hours and hours but there was some fishing to be done! (I think this is the B29 anyways...)

Wowza, that girl can fish! Those are some good looking bass. I been trying to convince my wife that I need to get a "real" fishing boat, but she isn't having it. We just got the canoe so it will have to do for now. I think I'm gonna get a trolling motor for it and an anchor and then maybe I can get out a little further from the coves where people shore fish. That probably won't happen until I get back from Afghanistan though. I only have a couple weekends left and lately I been stuck doing biology homework bleh!
That B29 is really cool too. I don't know much about diving but I wonder if anyone has dove down to that thing. It would be cool to see some pictures of it. Do you know the back story? Why it crashed and when etc..?

Just google Lake Mead B29 and you will find more reading than you have time for... Crash history, etc.

The depth makes diving on that B29 hard from what I understand. Mix gas, etc. Not for your average joe diver. Plus it is illegal to dive on that B29. Lake Mead has a no dive area that encompasses that plane plus several miles in all directions in that area. Historical site, etc. It has been dived on and there is videos and pictures available online. Normal lake depth would put that plane in over 190 feet of water but with the lake low it isn't as deep right now sitting in about 140 feet of water.

You just need to be persistant! It took me 1-1.5 years of begging to get the boat [Wink]
