Fishing is definitely my favorite form of recreation, but I decided to get a hunting license this year. I've never hunted before, and no one in my family does, but something in me just wants to give it a shot, so to speak, this year. Anyone on here put in for any tags this year, or do any other kinds of hunting?

Ive always wanted to go hunting but just could never afford it, guns are expensive camo and gear are expensive. ur not guaranteed a tag, and I'm a lousy shot and just flat out don't know where to go LOL, but if the opportunity ever came up I would definitely give it a try.[cool]

I'm not very interested in hunting as a sport, but I am very into it for the food aspect. That's the only TRUE organic meat. Nothing healthier.
I have been wanting to get into it, but nobody I know hunts, other than BigE. He does a deer hunt (I think every year - correct me if I'm wrong) but yes, those get expensive.
I only have a .22 long rifle and a 12 GA shotty, but my Pops has quite the gun cabinet. I could always borrow a .30-06 from him to kill bigger game like deer. I suppose I could buy slugs for my shotgun for deer hunting, but I'd rather not. It's more of a combat shotgun than a hunting gun anyway.
I guess in NV, you don't need a license to walk off into approved areas and hunt coyotes and jack rabbits til your heart's content. I wouldn't mind eatin a rabbit. I don't know if they are any good out here though.
What else can we hunt for out here? And how much do deer tags cost?

It was like 15 dollars to apply for the deer tag, and if I get drawn it's 30 dollars to purchase the tag. They increased the tag quotas quite a bit this year, and after doing a lot of math that I hope was correct, I put in for areas I felt would have better draw odds.
The odds of drawing any of the other big game (bighorn, elk and bear) are ridiculous, so even if I do enjoy hunting this year, I don't know if I'll keep applying for the decade or more needed to draw one of those. Though I guess antelope averages 5 years or so to get one.
I have a few buddies that are into duck, quail and chukar hunting, which only requires an extra stamp or two on the license, so hopefully I will get out and do that even if I don't get a tag.
I also know of (through a friend) some guys that are big into predator hunting, i.e. coyote, mountain lion, bobcat, fox and other so-called fur-bearing mammals, and they actually make a few bucks selling the pelts. Mountain lion is an over-the-counter tag, so that may be something cool. I've also heard it's delicious.
I'm not really all that interested in shooting a deer, per se, but I would like to have the whole experience of camping and tracking. And 50 lbs of deer jerky and steak sounds pretty good.

I went on my 1st deer hunt in 2001. I went with friends who hunt. Between myself, wife and 3 kids someone has had a deer tag for about last 10 years. There is a cost associated with it, and with your gear. I have just little by little over time acquired stuff I need and stuff I think I need. I only hunt deer since it something I can do without alot of help. The other animals while some could do it alone I don't want too. I eat everything I shoot, except for coyotes, I only shot one so far. We actually have a awesome state for hunting, just got to go north. If you have money to spend then once you get a tag hire a guide let them do all the work all you do is tag along and shoot when its time. I have averaged a tag every 3 years except the last 3 years, I was graced out with a tag each year. My kids applied for junior tags and so far the first 2 had 4 in a row the last one is hoping to get her third. My older daughter has shot more deer than my wife and me. We have awesome chukar, hunting and okay dove and quail. When its deer season in my truck you will find shotguns for birds rifle for deer, and fishing poles, there is always a lake near by. My greatest season last year, I got a spike buck, My first chuker, my first grouse, 2 cottontails several trout 1 of them 4lbs, Not all the same day hahah just during the month of October. It helps when your wife likes to hunt and fish too.

I have been hunting deer and Elk since I was about 7 years old. To be honest though, I have only been hunting in Nevada once and that was in '09 and it was not even my tag(it was a friends). I grew up hunting in Vermejo, New Mexico (Ted Turners property) and all throughout Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado. I put in for my tags in for Elk this year in Nevada but its my first year trying to draw a tag here so I am not too optimistic.

I archery hunt for deer and antelope every year. There is some great hunting in NV, we tend to stay near the Ely area and down near Hamilton. The cost isnt too bad, like fishing you just tend to acquire more and more gear as time goes on. For the draw....there are areas that are a 95% success rate to pull tags and others that are much much lower. We always do group hunts though, and if one of us gets a tag we all get a tag. Helps the odds quite a bit. For this year i think there is a late draw coming up, i know we had to have our apps in about 2 months ago.

I have not been hunting but I am hoping to this year. I purchased my license and applied for my tag asap back in March. I have a Savage Arms .30-06 With a 3-and-1 internal magazine, folding 9"-13" bi-pod, Nikon 8x-20x scope, pop up lens covers, and a Black Hawk butt stock cover to raise my cheek rest height so my eye always lands at scope level (I needed to raise the cheek rest height because the new scope needed taller rings due to the larger front objective). I can shoot a 1/2" group at 200 yards but I still need a lot of practice with longer ranges before deer season.

[cool]I have applied every year since I was a resident (2002) and got deer tags almost every year. Occasionally I don't make the draw so I wait for quail season to hunt. Like most have said the best hunting is up north (Ely,Elko) to go for deer, elk and antelope. I got my first deer on my first draw here. Check out the harvest charts on th ndow website for draw odds and success ratios. I mainly go for the meat but won't pass up a big racked mulie. Iput in for a deer tag this year and hope for another trip. I'm going to try for cow elk next year. Good luck on your next hunt.

I would love to get into some predator hunting here. I actually got a gun for just that purpose but have yet to figure out where I should go to use it. I have killed a mountain lion in my home state (WA). I wasn't hunting for it but its like an extra 10 bucks when you buy bear tags so I always got it just in case. Well my dad and I were out looking to bag a bear and he spotted a mountain lion about 80 yards away from us and I managed to drop it. I wouldn't say the meat was delicious but it was pretty good.
I just wish I knew where to go and what to look for to find good places to predator hunt. I don't really wanna burn a ton of gas driving around the state looking for a place to shoot some yotes or any other predators. I need to find people who have a little experience in the vegas area hunting predators, but I haven't had much luck... Oh well, I guess I got my $1200 gun for shooting at the range.

I was wondering the same thing a few months back. I talked to a ranger with BLM and he emailed me a map of the no shooting area surrounding Las Vegas. You can't shoot in anything marked as a conservation area and you can only shoot in the Lake Mead area if you have a tag for that unit, but not for yotes.
I was told I could go up to Coyote Springs a few miles north of Moapa. When I got there I passed the Clark county line and saw a huge sign that said "Your Public Lands"... except just past it, 30 feet from the highway, on each side, were smaller signs that said "Private Property, No Trespassing" The signs looked old and weathered so I'm not sure if they're still valid of if the larger "public lands" sign over rides them, but I do know at least one other hunter shared my disdain of finding the unfortunate signs because one of them had been blasted by a 12GA.

Just My 2 cents. If you guy's want a cheap entry into hunting. Pick up a Mosin Nagant Rifle. I bought 1 for under $100.00 bucks. Its a Russian Sniper that fires 7.62X54 rounds and the rounds are cheep surplus ammo. It's bolt action and deadly plus its a cool WW2 Gun with alot of history.

No tag for me this year. Looks like I get to wait till 2013 to get some fresh jerky. A few friends of mine got tags though, so I can at least go get the hunting experience and learn a thing or two this year in preparation for whenever I may draw a tag. Though I've never won a raffle in my life, so we'll see what happens.

There sure is something I haven't done in a looooong time. I grew up/lived in Montana until I went into the military at age 18. Every weekend was something. If not fishing of some sort hunting. Be it elk, deer, antelope, ducks, grouse, chicken, etc, etc. Been there done that.
Here is a picture from the late 80s I believe. I was already in the Navy but went home for hunting season every chance I had until I got married. Generally speaking a "just" above average one back in those days. The only picture I can find around here of one. I have shot plenty of bigger ones.
A fairly nice Mule deer out of the Missouri River breaks. Shot him going away from me. Perfect shot. In the back of the neck and out the front. Zero loss of meat. Dropped him on the spot. Of course I was shooting a Ruger 300 (Winchester .300 mag rounds) so rightfully so he dropped on a dime. lol I wasn't even on planning on getting one that day so I grabbed my dads big gun for something to mess around with in case I needed to do a 500++ yard shot that day while I was out with one of his co-workers showing him where to go, etc. He missed. I didn't.
That rack is somewhere in my dads house on a wall covered in hats. The wife doesn't like wild meat so how it goes. Haven't shot anything in years. All of my rifles are still in Montana at my dads house... Browning 22-250 for varmits/Antelope, Remington 30-06 for most everything else, shotguns, etc, etc. Never had a reason to bring them out here.

I've also come out tag-less. I still have a chance at the Elk dream tag though.
