Theres so many other waters on the way [cool] I would have a hard time making it [cool] they should open it up to all anglers not just flyers.

Gotta disagree with you on that one 4pound. It is relatively easy to catch a carp on conventional gear, at least here in America it is. But I know many fine fly fisherman that has never gotten one to even take a fly. That is why in the fly fishing community they are known as the "poor man's bonefish"... Honestly it took me forever to catch my first one on a fly rod. I have gotten better over the years, but I still have many a carpless outting. It can be a humbling fish when fly fishing for it. If you ever wanna hit up floyd lamb with me with the fly rod or with corn, there are some monster carp in those ponds.

sounds like fun, of course; It would be embarrasing for anyone to be seen near me with my flycasting skillset.[pirate]

I truly believe that after a 20 or 30 minute session I could teach you to cast well enough to catch a fish. It really isn't that hard... after that it's just practice. For all the whoop and show it boils down to timing and that comes w/ practice.... anytime you wanna go I'll gladly join ya if I have the time.. I started fly fishing like 12yrs ago when I moved to vegas... first outfit was the 20 dollar full set from the local outlet store... used the heck outta it too, then handed it down to me buddy. PM me if interested... just a side note... don't know how much fishing i'll do in the next few days.. i did something dumb and cut myself with a knife on the knuckle of my left index finger... purty swollen and painful though I think it's fine.
I don't know your level of fly fishing, but if you did buy the complete outfit from one of the marts, they sometimes only come with flyline and no backing. If that is the case, get some backing... it's cheap and load it first. If you get a carp on a fly rod w/ no backing you don't stand a chance... even against a little one. Like I said I don't know where y ou are at w/ fly fishing, but if you are in the beginning stages I promise you it looks harder than it is. Later, [signature]

yeah, im gonna take you up on that before to long. I got a 5wt white river combo from bass pro it came with backing and leader already on it. I bought some tipet and strike indicators. I have used flies for years on spinning gear with a water bobber, but after casting this around at lorenzi, I was really digging it. I have been trying to use the double haul but just cant get the motion down. I pretty much just let out about 20' and kind of whip it a couple times and can occasionaly get 25-30' out. Usually not. lololol.

If you spent the dough on that combo then I am assuming you want to learn to fly fish. I am not an expert, but this is my advice on how to learn...
There are plenty of youtube videos on how to cast... if we fish in person I will show you myself, but if not plenty of good videos. I would practice in 15 minute increments a couple of times a week in a NON fishing situation. As bad as this sounds you do not want to be distracted by the possibility of catching a fish while learning to cast. What I did was take several frisbees to a local park... throw the frisbees various distances... then tie a piece of high viz yarn to the end of your leader and practice laying the fly on the different frisbees. The ponds are bad 'cuz you always have to be aware of who or what you might snag on the backcast. You don't have that worry with a hookless piece of yarn. Lotsa web sites and videos will tell you not too look back at your backcast, but when you first start out I find it helpful so you can understand what the line is actually doing. **If i stress nothing else... THE ROD DOES THE WORK!!! not you.. [cool] One of the hardest things to overcome when converting from any other type of fishing to fly fishing is you use y our wrist differently... or not at all if you do it right.. I bet if you went to a field and practiced just twice with no distractions you'd be ready to hit the water with confidence w/ that 5wt you bought ![]() Later, [signature]

I forgot to tell you it is important to tie that yarn or a fly or something to the end of the leader, or the tippet part of the leader will fray.

i'm with you on that one i embarrass my self when i use my fly rod in public lol i look like a darn fool most of the time, but its fun, i have only caught bluegill and crappie on a fly rod in the past, i have an 8wt 9 foot scientific angler 2 piece rod with a pflueger reel. [signature]

I know especially during the spawn [cool] thats why they need to open the tourney to all methods. The whole reason for the tourney is to raise funds and catch some pretty mirror carp. Looks like blackfoot river & reservoir is a fly fishermans paradise they probaly want to keep it that way. When they open up the tourney to allow snaggers i'll consider making the 1,270 mile round trip.[ ![]() [signature] |
