It's raining in Northern California and our coastal rivers have opened up for salmon and steelhead fishing. We've temporarily dry-docked our jetboat and we're using our driftboat for the best in winter fishing. Once again, we're based out of the Ship Ashore Resort, right at the mouth of the beautiful Smith River. Chinook salmon fishing is happening right now. In the past week schools of salmon have been pouring into the river. Fish topping the 50 pound mark have already been landed. The next several weeks should be excellent!<br><br>SALMON: November and December are the prime salmon months. Smith River Chinooks are spectacular fish! Most average 15-30 pounds and fish topping the 60 pound mark are landed every year. We're fishing fifteen miles or less from the ocean, so the fish are usually chrome bright and as powerful as can be. These fish are truly worthy adversaries--delicious too!<br><br>STEELHEAD: The first substantial schools of steelhead begin to arrive in mid-December and continue through the season's closure on March 31st. They average 8-12 pounds and lunkers range from 15-25 pounds. Last season, one angler caught and released a monster 28 pounder. It most likely would have broken the CA state record of 27 pounds, 4 ounces; also caught on the Smith River. These steelhead are undoubtedly the utmost challenge for the West Coast's fresh water angler.<br><br>Our driftboat will accommodate up to three anglers and we have additional boats available for large groups.
