Fishing Mistake? Tell me if I am.
#1
Hi,

I am finding that I am catching a big majority of my bass and other fish for that matter seconds after the lure hits the water. Something tells me that possibly I am retrieving too fast, and missing other fish. This weekend was a perfect example. 6 bass caught, all right after the lure hit the water. I don't feel that I retrieve that fast.

what kind of lures are you using?

Typically a texas rigged worm or senko. But this happens on every style of soft plastic I throw. The strike is 5 seconds or less after it hits the water, or nothing. Never catching on the retrieve.

there is nothing worng with catcing on the splash, Gotta love it,

you may have to add spinner blades to your presentation or change up your reeling tec. Try pausing or lifting your rod and letting your offering drop ect... Even try counting your winds by thousands to get a speed the is comfortable for the fish.

I use an open face so pacing my self comes fairly easy for me, there are lots of times when it dosnt matter how fast you go, the fish just dont want to play chase.

If they are hitting on the top of the water, that is great, it could mean they are just waiting for the woonded to drop, that is natural in the fishing world, Walleye are natorious for hitting on the drop...

Sounds like you are doing something right, and not the other way around. You just have some very active fish. Bass often will hit on the initial fall. In fact, many techniques require taking the lure out of the water after that initial fall. This is what anglers who are flipping a jig do. You make a short flip. Then, you let the lure fall. If you don't get a hit you pull it out and flip to another spot.

Are you casting to shoreline? Is the lure falling, or are you simply retrieving before these fish hit?

Sounds all good to me as well. Many times the bass will hit my senco as it enters the water. Only time I work it back to the boat is when I'm fishing a weedy flat. If your throwing to weed lines or shore you'er doing it right.

I am casting to the shoreline in these instances, from one bank of a river to a structure on the other side. So after hearing your replies, it does make some sense now. So I must be putting it right on top of their heads, and get an instinct strike.

it sounds to me that your throwing it right in there mouth or hitting them in the head lol slow down your retrieve a little bit and or add a little twitch to the presentation change it up a little bit and do what feels comfy and catches fish i mix it up when throwing t rigs or jig heads i will pick the rod tip up then let it back down then i will bump it a couple times and just keep repeating the process i hope this helps you...
good fishing to you

that just means the bass are very active and at the serface try top water baits like poppers or skitter walks it is amazing watching them explode on it when they are active like that.
