What kind of bait produces the most catfish at brownlee??? I have used livers and all the other stuff but it doesnt seem to work and its hard to keep on a hook. Does anyone know of a good flavor of stinkbait or dip bait that works well..... also i know that the water level is way down right now...anyone been up there lately and done any good?

I second cut bait. I've always had best luck with squawfish and sucker meat. Cut up chunks of whatever type of fish lives in the reservoir can work OK too.
You can make chicken liver stay on the hook better if you sprinkle the livers with garlic powder and plain salt and leave them in the sun for a few hours on a cookie sheet. Then come back and flip them over and sprinkle the other side and leave them out for a few more hours. They will keep a long time.
Raw shrimp works well too.

Don't know about Brownlee specifically, but....
I've heard the same with carp meat. Local cut-bait - can't beat what they already know.
Never tried flavoring/drying them. Doesn't that lose some of the 'blood-letting' nature of the liver?
You can wrap livers in a swatch of nylon stocking around the hook. There are some hooks with springs incorporated to hold dough or such baits on. Then there's the dippin' tube types. I've tried some of the liquid squirt baits - blood 'flavor' - paired with worms, or liver chunks.
Seen tails of coagulated blood made for catfish bait. Get blood from the butcher - spread on a tray, let it "gel" then cut into cubes. Can't say I've tried it, but I'm intrigued.
Shrimp lends itself well to taking on other flavors too. I've worked with the cheap frozen shrimp from WallyWorld, and chop/soak them in various flavors. I've used mixes of the cooking panty (garlic+), or some commercial squirts (gamefish, catfish, anchovy, leech - etc).
And it often comes down to worms. Any attention getter tipped with worm. Seems like it can't be beat, no matter the water, no matter the fish.

anyone ever try those dip bait styles?.... another good question..is it illegal to chum if you are fishing for catfish???
Steck park...is it better to fish above it or below it toward the sand dunes?

Haven't been to Brownlee recently but in the snake in general i have noticed that worms work the best. I usually squirt garlic spray on them. I usually have 2 hooks on my line and will bait one with worm and the other with shrimp or stink bait. 9 times out of 10 the fish take the one with the worm.
It is illegal to chum for cats. There is a spot in the regs where it says its illegal to chum for game fish and adds that it includes cats in the rule.
I haven't used dip baits but do use dough baits. The dough bait washes off of your hook rather quickly but is better than fresh liver. I would recommend taking rubber gloves if you use it, the stuff leaves a stinky greasy mess that doesn't rinse off very easily.

I use stink bait/dip bait fairly regularly up there and usually have pretty good success.
The only kind that I've found that doesn't work is the stuff that comes in a tube, where you cut the tip and then pump it into a tube/bait holder. The stuff is really runny and probably works great for ponds, but where water is moving it doesn't stay in there worth crap.
Cabelas has a stink bait that looks like it comes in a peanut butter jar that has paid for itself, but my favorite is the stuff you can get from Howards in Nampa. Looks like a big tub, you can't miss it.
For the tubes/holders, bigger is not necessarily better. At Cabela's they have in different colors these 3" ribbed worms with a treble hook at the bottom that have worked wonders the last few years for me. The may look small, but I can't tell you how many cats I've missed using the bigger holders.
The only other tidbit I could give you, with the weather cooling down a bit, take some cooking oil to put in the bait and stir it up. Don't use too much, just a couple capfulls at a time. You want it to look the consistency of, pardon the term here, a fresh juicy turd. Bring a stout stick from home too, you don't want to try to stir that stuff with the sticks you'll find up there. Good times, let us know how you do. The more people we can get fishing with stinkbait, the less of an outcast I'll feel. Oh, and I'm working on a formula for my own, should be testing it out on 09/08 up there. I'll keep ya posted.

Ok So i went to brownlee on saturday night.. We threw everything we had at them stink bait worms dough baits ...... the only things that worked was a nasty rotten thing of chicken livers that i left out on the patio ffor a few days. As soon as the sun set we couldnt reel them in fast enough. I dont think we caught a catfish that was under 4 pounds ,,,, they were all beasts. the biggest vat we caught we weighed it and it was 14 lbs.. it was by far the biggest one that i have ever caught. I had a medium heavy pole with a bait casting reel and when it bit the hook it bent the pole tip clear to the water ..it was awesome.. We didnt go all the way to brownlee, well its hard to say whn that res. starts. we were south of steck park.
