Well, went out saturday for my first elk. Hunted all mornin saturday. Saw the elk all morning but couldnt get any closer than about 800 yards. After hiking almost 3 miles and climbing 2000 vertical feet in those 3 miles, gave up and went back home to get the horses. Went to a slightly different area and only took 45 inutes to get into the herd. She was about 6 years old to the best we could guess. A 302 yard shot. One shot one kill!! My buddy got his about 5 minutes later. WAs an awsome hunt and my first Elk!!!

Great Hunt - glad you were able to fill the freezer.
We do the late season cow hunts every year and do all our own butchering. Our homemade elk sausage get rave reviews.
Our Hunt is Jan 1st. - 15th and we have 5 tags - we contacted the DWR guy for our area and he said two years ago the herd was 1100 in our area and should be up to almost 1300 by the time our hunt is. Can't wait to fill the freezer.
Hunting in the snow brings back memories of hunting in Montana - the good ole days when I was in college.

What unit if you don't mind me asking?
My neighbor has a tag for East Canyon and all we are seeing so far are bulls.

The Wallsburg unit. We did see alot of bulls also but they were grouped up by theirselves quite aways away from all the cows

becouse they kill all the cow's. make's me sick to see them hunt them so long. i understand a lot of guy's feed there familys with them but it just sucks to see 2 elk die for the price of one.great job man not trying to take eny thing from you .

Congrats on your first elk, don't let anyone detract from it. The cows are bred clear back in Sept. so maybe our hunts ought to be in July and August.[:p]

Who needs to gut them anyway!! we bone them out right on the mtn with our cow tags, probably cuts 50% of the weight for the drag! the only thing that sucks is you have to keep something for proof of sex and we usually have to bring the heavy ass head down with us for that[:/] But we draw out for east canyon all the time and there is a huge heard up there.

Leave the heavy head and leave a piece of hide with the external " female parts" attached. According to the proc the proof must remain with the largest potion of meat.

All you need to leave on a cow is one teat attached if you quarter or bone the animal.

thats how i do it when i get to pack them out. but most yrs i back right up to them and load them whole. the cow i got this yr was the simplest ever. with a bull i leave the testies attached to a hind quarter or ham. gutted many with babies in them. its not a big deal.

I also use an otter ice sled, with a hitch or rope,to the back of the snowmobile when the snow allows, cut them in half, thrown them in and wa la, drive on down to the trailer and it makes it nice.
an old blue poly tarp also works great. roll them up like a burrito, tie them up and away you go. if you have to hand drap, that really helps too and the tarp doesnt weigh anything to carry with you.

lol. we use snow mobiles also on the late hunt on the south slope. when we cut them in half we sit them right on the seat behind us and use them for back rests. 2 seater sleds so they ride great.
