I'm going to be doing some trout fishing this weekend. Anyone have any advice on what has worked for this type of year. I been fishing trout all my life, but I always struggle at this time of the year. I'm in CT if that helps.

Hmm if your going in the stream for fresh stockies they will usually go after artificals like rooster tails and spoons off the bat and then they wise up and go after what looks like the stuff in the stream. If you go with live bait you really can't go wrong with drifting a wax worm. Not sure how the stockies react to minnows but here they usually wont go after them like crazy till a couple weeks have passed. Since most stockies are raised on corn and what not. You could also try that corn power bait stuff.
This weekend im going to try some steels and on the 3rd of Oct here i will be trying that to see if i have much luck with the just stocked trout. Just worried they will be in shock and wont be hungry. My guess is the water temps wont be to far off so they wont get into major shock.
Oh yah also I would reseach to find out how much they are actually stocking in each area. Your string of bad luck could be due to a low number being stocked therefore you wont catch as many cause many others beat you to it. I know in fall they won't stock it to much cause they blew most of there budget and stock in the spring.

You pretty much laid out how the fishing is up here. Opening day I crank them in with a roostertail or spoon. Then after that I use meal worms, baby nightcrawlers, and powerbait. Those all work great for quite a while. Then once the water warms up, they don't hit anything for me. They stocked it again a week ago today. Not sure the exact number of trout stocked in that area. I think they should pretty active with the water temp being lower than it has been all summer.

Yah the cooler water will make them active. The warmer water they will usually only hit flies, minnows and wax worms in my area during certain times.
When I went fishing for creek chubs for pike bait during the summer we hit a brown or two in a hour and a half almost everytime. We caught them each time on wax worms. I never used powerbait in the streams since they never ever bite on the stuff here. Try wax worms if you can find them. I guess you can say they move in the water different then the meal worms do since they are soft skinned and the meal worms have that armor type skin.
Since you said they stocked them last week over there then they should be pretty active if they are not already caught by other fisherman.
But yah seriously though look to see how much they stocked if you can find out. Is it a popular fishing spot? I mean is it like elbow to elbow full of gungho fisherman with there mickeymouse poles?lol
Dont you hate it when you got fly fisherman takeing up a huge hole to themselves when its busy. This one guy tried to do it and positioned himself deep in the hole and what not so people would try to avoid him. i asked nicely if i can fish there. He was like "NO" find your own spot. I was like this is a huge hole. He was like I dont care. So i said f**k it I toss my line in and I told the guy in a loud ticked off voice (im a big scary looking guy when i have the ticked off look) lol "Im going to fish here if u like it or not, I will let you throw the first punch and once you hit me your A** is mine. So you better make sure you knock my A** out". I told him "is it really worth it over a fish in a popular fishing hole?" He took off and grumbled its all yours. It pretty much let 3 other people fish the hole so i think it made them happy.

Lol yeah, I hate when people do that. I've ran into many rude people like that both fishing and hunting. I just try not to let them ruin my day. The area I'm going to is very popular in the spring, then starts to die down once summer roles along. It's never overly crowded during this time of year though. As for the numbers, DEP says they stocked 2,300 trout in 5 different rivers. One of them being the one i'll be going to. So hopefully it hasn't really been hit hard this past week. It should be a great day for it too. The forecast says mostly sunny with a high of 68.

hmm Seems like 300 to 600 a spot. Pending on what is fished heavily over the others will have more or less. 600 fish or less caught in a week is a high possiblity. I guess it depends on how many people keep or release there catch and how many of those are eaten by other predators or how many died by release and so on. hmm rain much? possibly keep the less die hards away.lol
Well good luck on catching anything. Hope it wasnt fished out yet. Remember to pack your camera so we can check out the catch. Im leaving for erie tomorrow night so hopefully will catch some steels and browns and whatever else is there. First year trying it so hope i get something lol.
Oh yah almost forgot, Try those wax worms. Many other fish like waxworms too but so do trout. lol

Well I went out this morning, from about 7-10. Caught these two trout on powerbait. I found this one hole where I saw about 10-12 10 inch+ trout. The water was so swallow because of lack of rain, I saw them as clear as day. They were all rainbows. I threw everything I had at them. Meal worms, wax worms, baby nightcrawlers, powerbait, roostertails etc. Just managed to land these two. The other ones barley even looked at my bait. Wasn't that bad of a trip though. I know theres more out there for next week.

Maybe its cause they can see you and didnt want to jump on your bait.lol I usually try to be like 15 feet or more away from a sited fish and just let it float in the area. Usually end up catching the ones i sighted. Well except for the palomino. I sight those and i cant get it to bite on anything
Well you had more luck then I did. LOL I didnt catch a single steel and it was raining so hard i could hardly call it fun. Everyone was catching them on super roosters and I didnt want to be bothered to go 30 mins to the nearest store to get one. Tried to buy one or trade some tackle for it but the aholes all wanted me to give them like 20 bucks. Itold them to f off cause that was just wrong. Specially when u have like 20 of them sitting in your tackle with wrappers still on them for 2.75.[mad] i would have gladly paid 5 to 7 bucks for the convience in getting one, but 20 now that is just plain stupid.
Crap was shoulder to shoulder so didnt want to lose my spot.
Well we went elsewhere the next day and caught a bunch of white and yellow perch. nothing spectacular but atleast we got to catch something lol.

Your probably right. I was up above them looking down. I'm pretty sure they saw me. The sun was out and the water was crystal clear. I'm going back to that spot tomorrow. This time I'll be approaching it from farther upstream, by letting my bait float down with the current. We had some good rain last night, so the water should be higher and not as clear.

your lucky. I can't fish for trout till the 6th of Oct. They changed the stock time from the 3rd. really made me . oh well. But yah if the water is cloudy I dont see you needing to be to far away. you could always find where there is fast moving water that leads into a nice hole and let it drift off of that for 20 feet.
I did that in a hole that was said to be dead and caught 3 browns in it during the summer. sure if u find something like that there u will hit like crazy. I like fishing the little small holes that dont look like a hole at all but just like 4 to 6 feet deep not that wide or long. Usually have luck with those types
. caught my first trout in something like that. next time I go there i will take a picture of it. it was alittle over 15 inches. i have a pic of it gutted somewhere i will post it.

The water being higher than it was last time will help out a lot too. Its going to be about 60 degrees. Great fishing weather. I believe they are going to be doing a few more stocks in October. Cant wait. I'm going tomorrow in the afternoon so if I do manage to land a few I'll post the pics on here. But as for you, those are nice ones you got there. I like that big rainbow over on the left. That's a meal right there.

I'll be trying today. They stocked a few days ago so they should be ok now. Went earlier today for an hour and didnt catch anything. Some guy was catching them left and right on a fly rod. Ill be trying that corn powerbait since they should still be use to the taste and smell of corn since that is mainly what they feed them with in the stock ponds and some worms. Ill try bottom and top fishing to see where they are biteing at. Dont know if they are down deep or near the shallows. Will have most of the day to figure it out.
will be fishing this little pond.
Oh forgot to ask, in your picture that top one was a brown right? how big was that rainbow? It has nice color.[fishin]

From the picture that top one is a brook trout. The brook was 12 inches and the rainbow was almost 14. Good luck today around here I've noticed them hitting flies like crazy. but when it comes down to lures and bait, they're not as interested. Well good luck today. I'll be going out saturday morning. They haven't stocked since sept. 17th, but from all the fish I've been spotting I dont think many have been pulled out of their yet. The next stock will be in the middle of this month. Not sure what day yet but I'm hoping to go within a few days of the stock.

If your fishing behind a stocking, use a lite leader line of no more than 6 pounds. 4 pounds is better.
freshly stocked like yellow cotton ball on a single hook or a niblet or two of cheep whole kernel corn.
remember, the cheep corn works best, stay away from name brands, they dont seem to care for that to much.
number six hooks, octopus will do you well.
if those trout are under 3 pounds you may want to even try two pound test... but I am sure if you have a quality sporting goods store near you, you can find three pound test leader line.
You want to go with as light a line as posible. the trout can feal those heavy lines and when they do they let go fast....
I wouldnt fill a spool with it, just make your self a 4 foot leader so you can retie hooks as needed.
be sure to add a barrol swivel between the two lines.
use either trylene or polimer knots....

I'll be fishing a river so I have a lot of luck drifting down a little powerbait. That stuff works great for me on stocked trout anywhere around here. A lot of times i'll catch them on a small nightcrawler or a mealworm. I attack a small splitshot weight, cast upstream, and wait for a strike.
