Bringing sheds to life with Mountain Mikes reproduction skulls
#1
This is a great idea and it makes me really want to get out there and find a bunch more sheds.
Mountain Mike has created a reproduction skull for the purpose of mounting sheds. Once complete it looks like a real Euro mount and looks great on the wall.
I found a decent set a few years back and tried them out on this skull and they worked great. Here are the before and after pics.

Nope, no trick.
Why? does it look bad? This was my first time staining antlers and there were a few spots that didn't look as dark, but overall I think it looks pretty good. Many people think they are too dark, but I like dark colored antlers.

Looks good Matt. This product might also be useful for those that don't want the mess and hassle of doing a real euro at home.

That looks pretty awesome! I've thought about doing that with some of my big sheds. Did you get the stain from that guy too? The only suggestion I would make would be to make the tips lighter, but hey they look awesome. I dont' think they're too dark at all, i've seen bucks that live in the pines all year and they're really dark horns, and they look really awesome. Thanks for posting!
What would you say your cost ended up being?

This was the first "Staining" job that I have done. I didn't even know at the time that they had staining products. I used a dark oak wood stain really lightly and then sanded over that a little. If I do it again, I'll just spend the $10 and order the antler stain from Vandykes.
The skull and hardware cost $39.99 at Cabelas, but I snagged the last one in the store last week. You can also get them on the Cabelas online store or from a few other retail stores.
Pretty cheap for a sweet looking euro mount that I didn't even kill. Everybody that has seen it, has asked me where I shot it [cool]
