I'm going to change my impeller this fall when I winterize my boat and change the gear oil. I've never done it before and I was wondering if I just needed to buy the impeller or the whole impeller replacment kit with the gaskets and seals. The kit is about three times as much and I was wondering what exactly it is that wears. Also is there anything else that I need to adress or check over while I have it apart?

Drop the lower unit & look the water pump over closely. If the housing the impeller runs in isn't grooved, just buy the impeller. Be careful of the gaskets when disassembling and use a very small amount of silicone sealer on them when you reassemble & you oughta be OK. Depending on your mechanical experience, it might be a good idea to go th the S.L.County library and research the subject. That or buy a service manual.
