Salmon at 6th Street
#1
The run has officaly started at 6th street.

Hooked and released my first Salmon of the year tonight. It was a fresh fresh silver (like I had just pulled it out of 180 foot of water on Lake MI). I let it go because it was foul hooked on the tail. It was such a nice looking fish I was half tempted to keep it but far to many people out there for me to do a stupid thing like that.

Saw 3 other salmon caught tonight and a couple of coho. All were a nice silver.

The number of people fishing has increased A LOT !!! Four days ago there were 10 of us out there. Tonight I counted 25 and another 8 fishing from shore. I'm sure by this weekend it will be a mad house. I'd suggest going in the mornings if you plan on going (not as crowded then)

Did ya' notice that the vegitation is disapearing from the lakes ?
Word of mouth has it as the fall bite is getting better on the inland lakes . I guess the big fish are putting on a couple pounds untill us icefishermen can get out to give them a little something ,something [Image: bobwink.gif].

Hey

My husband and I were one of the many out on the wall last night.

Went down there for a few hours before I had to go to work tuesday night.

Went about 6, stayed til about 7:30.

Were you wading, and what were you using.

We were using hot n tots, did'nt want to buy any eggs yet, not knowing how the fishing is.

Well hope to see ya, we still need to hook up some time.

Yup I was one of the ones out there when you were there. I was the smucko that nearly fell down and sat in the river about 7pm[Wink].

I wear camo wadders with a red pouch on left pocket and always always wear a red white n blue flag hat when I'm wadding so it shouldn't be to hard to spot me.

Last night was the first night I saw salmon trying to jump the dam. Saw about 4 fish go for it and fall back over.

I won't be down there tonight (wadders need to dry[frown]). And we have plans for most of the weekend and then I'm going to Petoskey on Monday so the next time I'll be at 6th street will be in the evening Tues & Weds (16-17) Usualy not as crowded in the middle of the week. Be sure to stop over and say hi.

Most of the fish I've seen taken so far have been hitting on single egg or fly egg combo. I did see a guy take a salmon last night using a jointed florence yellow rapala.

I've been tossing (and loosing) spoons, flies, and spawn but havn't (legally) landed one yet. It's a slow start so far but should get better over next few weeks.

Depends on which side of the river you want to fish.

East side

600 Monroe Ave NW
Grand Rapids, MI 49503-1473

There is a wall with guard rail that you can fish from. Be sure to bring a long net as it is a good 8 foot drop down before you reach the water. A lot of people fish from the wall and someone there will probably have a net... but ya never know.

Don't fish up close to the dam on this side. It looks deep but really isn't more than a couple feet. Go downstream a bit and stay about 30 yards north of the first bridge overpass that crosses. There is a nice deep hole there. If that isn't producing keep walking downstream (there is a nice concrete path and everything) and fish just north of the post office. Nice deep hole there. Again... bring a nice long net.

West Side

600 Front Ave NW
Grand Rapids, MI 49504
(Just keep driving south on Front Ave... it will dead end right into the fish ladder)

On this side you are right on the waters edge and don't have to worry about a net for landing a fish. There is a line drawn on the cement near the fish ladder. You have to stay on the south side of that line (unless you want a fine)

Fish anywhere between that line and the boat launch. After (south) of the boat launch is a waste of time as it is really shallow and rarely holds any fish.

If between the line and the boat launch is crowded go down stream 50 yards and fish between the big drain colvert thing and the first bridge overpass. I've seen several fish caught there over the years. (I'd highly recommend this spot)

Oh yeah... one other note. If I hear you went down there fishing without calling me your in big trouble !!! I'm only 20 minutes away. Give me a call and we'll fish it together Bigfishtackle.com style. [cool] (Besides... I still have your maple surup that I needed to get to you) [:p]

If you decide to make the hike to Tippy let me know... I'll pitch in some gas money and ride it with ya.

bird season will have to open back up in my back yard again for another day before I can make the trip either way, When going to tippy I almost go right by Lonehunters place, I have to turn west around bay city...

but if I am hunting over in lansing I am only a couple hours from your place..

from pontiac its 3 hours to your place and 3.7 hours to tippy and I never make it in the time posted, Last time it took 5 hours for me to make it to tippy, Ya, I do have to stop a couple times on the way... Sure wish pinconing was on the way, I am out of pinconing cheese.... cant find it in the store any more....[Image: angry.gif] When it comes to hot sandwiches with cheese, anint nothin better than a slice of pinconing.... It is costly tho, almost a dollar a slice.[Image: whistle.gif]

If I make it over that way, you can be sure I will drop a call.

One of theis days we all need to meet up some place for a bigfish get together, that is If these gas prices ever streighten out....

Val has to work and I need to stay home and do some hubby things tonight seeings how I was up in Charlevoix and Petoskey fishing all day long yesterday.

We will go down there tomorrow (Wed) night. Hopefully we can all meet up then. Give us a call.

Mike

Report from Petoskey Bear river..... Lots of fish, lots of people fishing for them. Fish seemed to prefer the green spawn over regular. I landed two fish. Both foul hooked [frown] in the belly.

I know he said that his brother was using a red and white daredevil, because he lost it.

I forgot what it is that he stated that he used.

I will find out for ya.
