Hey there MrLipripper and son,
You lucky puppies, date wise that's Sat/Sun/Mon, moon phase wise that is in the second quarter (half). By that time, all the boats will be on Summer schedule (leaves around 6am)which often includes twilight trips. (6pm to 11pm)
There will be lots of 1/2 and 3/4 day open party boats with some of the 3/4's even going out to the islands if..... the bite is really hot.
It's possible the yellowtail, barracuda, white sea bass, sandbass, etc. will be avaliable to the angler willing to travel a bit, as it seems you are.
I would plan the fishing part of my trip to revolve around what landings and boats are really hot and recommended near the day you're going to actually go. It's a toss up, if you go on either sat or sun you get the weekend crowd which could be a killer if the sandbass started to charge then. But Monday, with less people, will have had a lot of the usual spots hammer pretty hard. Sigh!! problems problems. ha ha
As I live here in Long Beach, CA, I'm spoiled with no less than 10 landings reasonably close. When visiting do you have internet access? The library's here almost all have internet and a visitor might be able to use, that's might.
Yes, there's Dana Point, Davey's Locker, and further north L.B. Sportfishing, Pierpoint Landing, 22nd St Landing and others just to name a few in the area.
I'll be putting out more information on landings in the next week or so for landing information boats, etc.
Is your son under 16? If not, he'll need a license. (see the post on license info) It is very unusual but if you can it might be wise to check with the landing of your ride if they sell licenses. Sometimes they run out believe it or not. I would go to a local tackle store servicing the saltwater angler on general principals if I needed a license just to get the latest info.
Don't hesitate to ask further questions, as the time gets nearer to your trip.
Be hearing from you soon,
JapanRon

Hey there MrLipripper,
We aim to please. Tell your friends about our many different boards here as all our moderators do the very best to make the fishing experience the best possible for all.
Oh ya, some landings have a 2 for 1 fare day or a 1 adult and half-off for a buddy day, and some have a promotion where you can take a kid under 16 for FREE! Then you guys could go twice!!!!!
Talk to ya in a few,
JapanRon
