I spent Sunday enjoy the beautiful warm weather at my favorite Small mouth bass fishing hole. I spent the last few days up the mountain with the gusting winds so I took Rick and his girlfriend out to Newcastle. The water is coming up quick but is still at the bottom of the dam. Rick and his girlfriend came to catch some of the trout that was just planted. The water temp was in the low 50's so I didn't expect the bass to be very active.
We fished in the corner of the dam and watched as Rick's girlfriends (who was fishing with powerbait) was swinging every couple minutes but managed to set the hook on one 10" rainbow. I was throwning a Gitzit jig from 11 til 4 and managed to miss a dozen or so but I think that was the golden shiners. I hooked a 10" rainbow and a 17" small mouth which Rick and his girlfriend started laughing when I said it's a monster because they thought I was snagged up again for the 100th time. I tried everything I thought would work with that jig and was well rewarded with this nice first bass of year. It weighted in at 4 1/2 pounds. The best things was the looks on their face when I pulled that fish out especially his girlfriend. I don't think she seen a smallmouth that big. I've caught bigger but that jaw dropping and the props Rick gave was well worth the effert. The total for the day was 2 rainbows, 1 bass.
I'd say the bass should start spawning in about 2-3 weeks and if your looking for trout the DWR is planning another stocking next week.
