I am by no means an expert, but I fish the Preston area in the Spring. I usually can catch some fish at the beginning of May however the fishing really picks up around Memorial day depending on the weather. Historically I have had my best weeks the week after Memorial Day. That is just my experience, hopefully others will chime in.

Leaky,
Like WindRiver I also fish the Preston Area lakes a lot and I have to agree with him, end of May is the time for Bass up there. You can still catch them, but like most other lakes you have to sloooooow down. When the water temps get higher up there is when it is really fun to fish for Bass. Trout on the other hand I have caught throughout the year (not ice fishing, I dont ice fish) usually just "long-lining" Rapala's. If you need any other info just ask or shoot me a PM. I am usually up in the Preston area 3-4 a month when the ice comes off the lakes.

As far as Idaho fishing goes I usually (99% of the time) stay around the Preston Area lakes and of course the Oneida Narrows (Bear River). As far as the smallies are concerned, the Narrows are the only place that I have caught them. I have not caught a smallie out of the Preston Area lakes, nor do I know if they are even in any of them. If I remember correctly we talked (on here) about some of the BIG smallies that I caught there in the Narrows. Remember? There was and still are a lot of people that dont believe me when I say I caught some Smallies out of there, 4 of which I took up there and on one cast proved them wrong!!! Wish I could be more helpful with the smallies. The largies on the other hand I can help you out I suppose. Twin Lakes produced a LMB at a 2 1/2 to 1 cast to catch ratio for me last summer and that is no joke!!! I'm not a "Bass Man" but I do enjoy catching them and do know enough to get by, but I tell you what, that was the BEST fishing of last year there at Twin Lakes in the summer!!!

Thanks bud. I will readily admit that smallies are my favorite and I have the Narrows on my list. Still would like to know know about time periods. Anyways, any specifics as to where on the Narrows would be greatly appreciated. PM me with info. if you have a mind to "give up" your secrets. Thanks again, Sparkinator and I appreciate it. Still haven't tried Twin lakes but the the other areas I've tried have been wonderful. Why else buy an out of state license when I'm in Utah?
P.S. I aim to give Twin Lakes a shot!!!!!
