So I took my ultralite rod with me and thought I'd try to catch a couple bass or a bluegill between gathering and boiling sap for surup.
Tried wax worms, tried gulp worms, and earthworms (there was a shovel leaning up against the barn).
NOTHING....
You know, that is a first. Don't think I've ever fished the pond without something hitting. I did however see ALOT of turkey tracks. They must have been going down to get a drink.
Plans for stocking the pond with gills has been put on hold for now. Grandpa said just keep the bass and throw back all the gills for a couple years. We did provide some more structure this year for the little buggers in the way of left over pvc piping from the bathroom remodel we did.

What reel are you currently using on your steelhead rod ? Shimano sedona is what I have been using but have been contimplating the Shimano stradic .

OH THAT LITTLE STINKER !!!! She got me. Guess that's what I get for leaving my computer logged in. [crazy]
Anyway.... I use an Abu Garcia 753 Cardinal reel. I just bid on another one, a Cardinal MX130R on ebay tonight. Hopefully in another 17 more hours it will be mine.
I like the rear drag control and fast cast trigger features. Plus I'm a bit partial to the Cardinal series reels because my grandpa's last name was Cardinal. He's the one that dragged me up and down the Ausable huntin walleye as a kid.
For rod I use a Shakespeare 10'6 light action spinning rod. My buddy let me use his custom made St. Croix rod last year (he's a custom rod builder check out his site that I built for him) and I drewled all over it for 2 months during the salmon season. One day (maybe when i grow up) I'm going to have to get me one of those....

if you are going for bigger gills, you will want to do a feeding...
get a good steel or plastic can that you can put a lock on to keep the coons out and leave it at the barn. you can pick up fish food that you can throw out to them when ever you go to the farm.
there are automated fish feeders that work the same as deer feeders that you can put on the end of the dock...
it wont take much to get them to start growing.... buy it by the 50 pound bag and trow out a half gallon of feed per week and in a month you will begin to see a difference. even the stunted gills will start taking on some gurth
just remember this, the life span of a gill or crappie is only 5 years... they start reproducing in 3 years so they need to be full grown by then...
