Idaho vs. Utah Perch

Greetings,

I hope this does not start a war, but I have seen some pretty amazing perch reports from both the Idaho and Utah boards and so my question is; Which state has the best perch fishing? I have read some pretty dedicated reports of people driving to the dead center of Utah to fish Yuba, with a limit of ten perch. I know Pineview is also a good perch fishery in Utah.

On the Idaho side we are catching perch everywhere in my neck of the woods Ririe has been good for nice perch, Roberts has been electric for the small ones, Mud Lake has produced good perch this winter, even the Rexburg pond has perch.

In other parts of Idaho, Salmon Creek Falls has done well, Weston produces them, and many great reports have come from American Falls this winter. I also hear Magic is getting back to some good perch fishing. I know I am only scratching the surface, but Idaho seems to have it's fair share of opportunities. If you are talking the cost to get perch, as far as travel I believe we have Utah beat, and although the Yuba perch are impressive; I think Ririe, American Falls, and Magic would give Yuba a run for its money.

I know there are a few places in Nevada that might show both states up, and I would love to fish Lake of the Woods in Minnesota, just to have the chance to land a 1 pound perch. Again I would just like some opinions from perhaps both sides of the border. It has just been a good year on the ice I think everywhere. Also just to let my Utah friends know I might have been raised in Idaho, but I graduated from Utah State, and I married a Utah girl. So please take the hooks off when you cast your lures at me[]

You forgot to mention CJ Strike which produces many 10"+ perch. However our perch population is all based on our water supply, When we have water we should have perch and if it's low so will be the quality of the perch population.

Good question. I haven't fished Yuba and some of the reports from there sound good so they may have Idaho beat. Next winter will likely offer some very good perch fishing in Idaho. American Falls and Magic should have some very good perch fishing for fish worth bringing home next winter.

My largest perch to date was caught out of Montepelier Res. in 2001 it was 13 1/2" long! I caught two this year out of Mudlake that went 12" and last year we caught two over 12 1/2" at Mudlake. Ririe has been putting out numbers of perch in the 10" range. With good water I don't see it getting any worse in the next year. I do not know why perch fasinate me. Maybe it is because of days like Sat. when I watch 100s of them stare at my offerings on the aqua-view. We caught a few, but most of them didn't even take a sniff at all the different things I threw at them. Other days then seem like the dumbest fish on earth.

They just started letting you keep 10 perch out of yuba just last month keep all don't put any back. they drained it and did repairs or something a couple years ago and when they filled it backthey had perch off limits. when they raise they limits more the size will drop rockport used to be the perch capital and now you don't here much on it cuase it got fished out. and one other thing there are no fish in idaho they're all in utah

Agree with Ririe, but ya all forget the Preston area lakes that produce pretty good perch. Some days hot, others o well. As I stated in my last post on twin lakes, took one 13 incher and several just a tad smaller with the majority around 9+. And Glenndale can be hot too, but very deep and lots of smaller ones when they are on the bite.

Hyrum lake had about 3 years where it was the perch capitol of the west. Hell there were only 3 guys that fished it. It just over populated and crashed. In 2 years they wiped out a major population of shiner minnows. Absolutely huge perch , you would have thought the water had steriods in it.

That was so AWESOME...i was in middle/high school at the time. I would beg/borrow/steal a ride out to Hyrum any day i could even for just an hour to fish for the perch...it was so fun. It bonked and then the trout fishing was phenominal...and overlooked too. Now it's going back to Perch really fast. This year I catch 1/4 or less the Trout I caught last year. Once the perch in Hyrum and Newton get some size they will be unbelievable fisheries again. Newton was the same way with perch and MONGO Bluegill. We would catch the biggest bluegill i've ever seen out there for a few summers...then it drained.[] For now though...unless you drive to Yuba...Idaho has better perch fisheries.
