Fishing slowed somewhat last week due to rain and thunderstorms. It should pick up this week if the weather stabilizes.
Southeast Lower Peninsula
Lake Erie - Perch are being taken by the international buoy. Walleye have been caught along the edge of the shipping channel and off the Fermi Power Plant at the banana dyke in 14 to 20 feet of water.
Detroit River - Has good perch action in 6 to 8 feet of water around the southern tip of Celeron Island. Some walleye are being taken drifting with harnesses.
St. Clair River - Walleye fishing is good drifting with harnesses and worms.
Lexington - Fishing has slowed due to weather but things should pick up this week if the weather stabilizes.
Port Sanilac - Some perch were taken in 15 to 40 feet of water but anglers need to keep moving to locate schools of fish. Salmon, trout, and walleye were scattered at all depths. Fishing pressure has been light.
Saginaw Bay - Most fishing activity is concentrated in the middle of the bay, around Buoys 1 to 4 and around the inner Spark Plug in 18 to 23 feet of water. The area off the Pinconning Bar has also been good. Good numbers of channel cats are being taken out of the Hot Pond. Fishing is reported slow out of Quanicassee, with a few catfish being taken from the river. At Sebewaing, most trollers are fishing the Spark Plug. Bass anglers are doing well in Wildfowl Bay in 5 to 7 feet of water. Caseville is slow, with a few walleye coming off Oak Point.
Southwest Lower Peninsula
St. Joseph - Chinook are being taken trolling 35 to 65 feet down in waters 65 to 90 feet deep. A few steelhead and an occasional lake trout and coho are also being taken. Best baits are magnum spoons, flies and flashers. Pier fishing has been fair for summer steelhead and perch. Perch is good in 25 to 35 feet of water north to the pier at Rocky Gap.
St. Joseph River - Fishing has been difficult as the water levels are low.
Grand Haven - Anglers have been catching fish in 80 to 140 feet of water fishing 50 to 90 feet down. Blue/green spoons and spinnies/fly combos have been working the best. Lead core and copper line have also produced fish. Drum and catfish are being caught off the piers. Summer steelhead are being taken off the pier 3 to 4 feet down using a sliding bobber rig with a cooked shrimp. No perch have been reported.
Grand River at Grand Rapids - Water levels are still low so walleye are concentrated in deeper holes. Summer steelhead fishing is good between 4:00 and 9:00 am using glow-in-the dark tubes and crawlers. Bluegill and crappie are being taken throughout the river. Catfish are biting on cut bait and dip baits . Good pike fishing up and down the river near log jams using spinners and top water baits.
Reeds Lake - Good numbers of perch are being taken from the north side of Sunken Island at the 40 foot drop off.
Grand River at Lansing - Fishing below the North Lansing Dam is producing good catches of rock bass, largemouth and channel cats using crawlers under bobbers. Water levels are low so fish are concentrated in deeper holes.
Lake Delta - Has good fishing for largemouth, pike, bluegills and catfish.
Muskegon - Chinook are still being taken in 100 to 200 feet of water. Early in the morning fish 50 to 60 feet down and during the day try 70 to 120 feet. Best baits are accents of blue, blue dolphin, blue veggie, caramel dolphin and lemon ice.
Muskegon Lake - Bluegills are being taken in 6 to 8 feet of water fishing the weed line on the north side of lake and near the black buoy on wax worms, night crawlers and spikes. Pike can be taken on the east end of the lake with shiners. Bass fishing is good around the weed beds. A few walleye have been taken with crawlers.
Northeast Lower Peninsula
Rogers City - Fishing has slowed due to high winds and rough water. Those who braved the weather fished early morning or late evening in 45 to 70 feet of water. Try lures in green, white or darker colors. Fishing should pick up as the weather calms.
Harrisville - Overall fishing is not as good as it has been. Lake trout have been caught in 75 to130 feet of water near the bottom using spoons. The further north of Harrisville you go the better the fishing has been. Fishing pressure is light.
Oscoda - A few lake trout have been caught off the bottom in 90 to120 feet of water. Most fish are in the 3 to 6 pound range. No reports of any pink salmon, coho or steelhead. Pier anglers are catching many sublegal smallmouth bass and walleye, with an occasional catfish or drum. Crawlers and leeches have been working best.
Thunder Bay River - A few large walleye are being taken in 25 to 65 feet of water. Pier fishing is slow, with a few bass and panfish being caught.
Au Gres - Walleye fishing continues to be good in 25 to 40 feet of water on crawler harnesses, crankbaits and spoons.
Higgins Lake - Lake trout are still being taken on extra large cowbells and bombers. Perch are being caught in 50 to 55 feet of water near the Sunken Island and north of the main island on wax worms, crawlers and fathead minnows. Brown trout fishing has slowed.
Houghton Lake - Has good fishing for walleye, bluegill and bass. Large pumpkinseed sunfish have been taken. Fish close to the weedbeds with leaf worms, crawlers and leeches.
Northwest Lower Peninsula
Walloon Lake - A few walleye are being caught in the west arm from 15 to 40 feet of water trolling with crawler harnesses and body baits. Bluegill are being caught in the mill pond with worms or small jigs. Casting with spoons and crank baits is producing a few smallmouth bass, while fishing with a minnow and bobber is working for perch. A couple trout have been caught using spoons or rapalas in deep waters.
Charlevoix - Windy and rainy weather has kept fishing activity low in the area. A few anglers are reporting some success for salmon and lake trout in waters 120 feet and deeper. Glow spoons and flies have been best early morning and late evening. There have also been reports of salmon being caught in shallow, warmer waters. Perch fishing on Lake Charlevoix has improved and anglers are taking them on minnows and worms close to shore. Pier anglers are catching a few smallmouth on crawlers and leeches.
Thumb Lake (Lake Louise) - In the west basin, effort for bass has remained steady with anglers casting and trolling tubes, spinners and crawlers in depths ranging from 10 to 25 feet in the western margins of the lake and the shallow flats on the north side of the basin. In the east basin they have been fishing the church camp shoreline and the shallow flats drop-off. Panfish have been taken on crawlers, minnows, and leeches in 10 to 15 of water in the west basin close to the public access and along the western shoreline. No splake or pike have been reported.
Traverse City - In the East Bay, chinook are starting to be caught off Deepwater Point and the Bluffs while trolling spoons. Whitefish have been spotty, with fish being taken on wigglers in the south portion of the bay off Mountain Jacks in 60 to 80 feet of water. Smallmouth bass fishing continues as fish have finished spawning and are on the feed. Lake trout fishing has been good from Center Road launch to the Bluffs. At Elk Rapids, numerous smallmouth continue to be taken drifting minnows. Catfish are being taken off the harbor and in the Elk River. Fishing for whitefish has been slow. In the West Bay, fishing has been slow due to the festival and numerous pleasure craft on the water. Chinook have been taken around Lookout Point across to Elmwood while trolling spoons. Lake trout fishing has been slow with some fish taken at Red Eight and in the gravel pit. Smallmouth bass have been taken around Marion Island and along Old Mission from Tucker Point to Merril Point casting spinner and body baits. Whitefish have been taken off Lee Point in 70 feet of water using wigglers and jigging spoons on the bottom.
Frankfort - Good catches of big chinook, lake trout, and a few steelhead are being caught in the Herring hole and off of the bank 80 to 120 feet down in 130 to 170 feet of water. The best times to fish are just before sunrise to noon, and from sunset to 11 pm. Blue and green lures have produced good catches. Also try glow Blue Dolphins, Monkey Puke, blue Chilly Willies, Angry Gnome, and Skittles. On the piers anglers fishing for alewife or casting Cleos and Wobblers have been catching brown trout, chinook and steelhead. With the recent north winds, the cooler water has been near the pier heads and kept good numbers of alewife nearby. In Betsie Lake anglers trolling for pike have caught some nice sized fish near the wall and back near the Elberta docks.
Onekama - Anglers trolling for salmon and trout have had the best luck straight out from the piers, in the barrel, and up by the greens. Good catches of chinook, lake trout, and a few coho have been caught 50 to 120 feet down in waters 80 to160 feet deep. Green, orange, blue, and glow spoons or j-plugs have all produced good catches, as well as blue or gold flies behind a white hootchie. The best times to fish have been in the morning hours until about noon.
Portage Lake - Fishing has been slow this week due to a recent mayfly hatch, but good sized bluegills, rock bass, and pumpkinseed are being caught in 10 to15 feet of water. Anglers trolling for walleye and pike are having the best luck along the north shore with orange crawler harnesses and dare devils.
Manistee - Pier anglers have caught a few steelhead. They are still catching rock bass on wax worms and minnows. Anglers trolling for chinook, steelhead, lake and brown trout have had luck straight out and a little north of the harbor in 60 to100 feet of water. Fish are also being taken to the south of the harbor.
Ludington - Chinook, steelhead and lake trout have been taken while trolling to the north towards the point in 60 to 100 feet of water. Pier anglers have had little luck catching bass and pike. No salmon and trout have been reported.
Upper Peninsula
Torch Lake - Fishing has slowed after a severe cold front passed through the area. Anglers were jigging for walleye instead of trolling. Yellow perch were being taken fishing the weed beds. Fishing should pick back up again this week.
West Portage Lake - Fishing has slowed over the past week. Anglers who spent a lot of time fishing caught a few walleye drifting with crawler harnesses close to the Grosse Point shoreline and drifting out from the shoreline in waters 20 to 40 feet deep. A few walleye were also taken out from the Bootjack shoreline on either side of the point.
Little Bay de Noc - Heavy rains with severe thunder storms slowed fishing throughout the bay. Walleye action was slow with most catches reported at night. Anglers fishing during the day reported fair catches off the Gladstone Beach area jigging and drifting crawlers in 18 to 25 feet of water. Fair catches were also reported at the mouth of the Escanaba River drifting or trolling crawlers in 16 to 20 feet of water. Fair perch catches just off Butlers Island in 10 to 17 feet of water jigging worms. The new fishing pier in the Gladstone Marina is now open and is a great spot to fish.
Big Bay de Noc - Some walleye activity west of Little Summer Island. Good salmon fishing at Fairport fishing 40 to 60 feet down in 100 to 130 feet of water trolling green and glow spoons. Nice perch catches were reported in Goully Bay jigging worms and minnows in 10 to14 feet of water. Anglers reported a lot of small perch in Ogontz Bay jigging worms in 10 to18 feet.
Marquette - Fishing pressure has been low due to winds and rain. Lake trout fishing has ranged from fair to good for those heading out. Most success is being had in 150 to180 feet of water using spoons and flies, both in shades of green. Salmon and rainbow trout fishing has been slow.
Munising - Fishing activity has been slow. A few splake are being caught when casting spoons off the mouth of the Anna River.
Au Train - Anglers are catching lots of small perch, pike and an occasional smallmouth.
Grand Marais - Anglers trolling for lake trout are still catching their limits. Some small whitefish are being caught off the pier.
De Tour - Chinook and atlantic salmon fishing is good, while lake trout fishing is fair. Boats are trolling the shipping channel to the #3 green can and around the lighthouse area, including the reef. A few boats are fishing the west side of Drummond Island for lake trout and chinook by the red can. Anglers are using lemon ice. Herring are biting in Potagannissing Bay around Big Trout Island and Long Island in 9 to 20 feet of water, depending on water temperature. The most common bait is a wax worm with any color teardrop. Try Maud Bay north of Detour for pike and smallmouth bass.
St. Marys River - A few herring are still being caught around Long Island in 28 feet of water using red tear drops tipped with a wax worm. Walleye can still be caught in Scott Bay on the northwest side of Peck Island in 8 to 12 feet of water using bottom bouncers with a crawler harness. On Drummond Island, perch are being taken off the dock at Yacht Haven Marina using small minnows.
Cedarville and Hessel - Activity is high fishing from Hessel pier. Anglers are catching pike, smallmouth bass and perch. Perch are also biting in Moscoe Channel and Government Bay, with smallmouth bass hitting from Moscoe Channel all the way to Hessel. A few small salmon have been caught in the east end of McKay Bay in the Dolomite Channel, and around Goose Island out of Hessel. Herring are being taken in Government Bay and the Moscoe Channel in 9 to 20 feet of water using wax worms on an orange jig. Pike are consistently hitting in Cedarville Bay with the average fish ranging between 31 and 37 inches. Anglers are still fishing with minnows or trolling with anything in any color. Pike are also in Musky Bay, but the sizes are smaller.
St. Ignace - Good catches of salmon are being reported while trolling from the city launches in St. Ignace to the Coast Guard station, the east side of Mackinac Island and the southwest side of the bridge. Best baits are green/gold, blue/silver, or blue/green spoons or light blue and white flies with silver flashers. Shore anglers should try the primitive launch on the west side of the bridge for pike using blue and silver spoons, stick baits or small cleos.

On Drummond Island, perch are being taken off the dock at Yacht Haven Marina using small minnows.
Cedarville and Hessel - Activity is high fishing from Hessel pier. Anglers are catching pike, smallmouth bass and perch. Perch are also biting in Moscoe Channel and Government Bay, with smallmouth bass hitting from Moscoe Channel all the way to Hessel. A few small salmon have been caught in the east end of McKay Bay in the Dolomite Channel, and around Goose Island out of Hessel. Herring are being taken in Government Bay and the Moscoe Channel in 9 to 20 feet of water using wax worms on an orange jig. Pike are consistently hitting in Cedarville Bay with the average fish ranging between 31 and 37 inches. Anglers are still fishing with minnows or trolling with anything in any color. Pike are also in Musky Bay, but the sizes are smaller.
St. Ignace - Good catches of salmon are being reported while trolling from the city launches in St. Ignace to the Coast Guard station, the east side of Mackinac Island and the southwest side of the bridge. Best baits are green/gold, blue/silver, or blue/green spoons or light blue and white flies with silver flashers. Shore anglers should try the primitive launch on the west side of the bridge for pike using blue and silver spoons, stick baits or small cleos.
