Bigguns on Pineview
#1
Well, now that I got your attention with the thread name I'm going to have to burst your bubble a bit. They were big guys, but not the species you'd all rather hear about.

Anyhow, Hookjaw_Brimhall was kind enough to meet up with me after work yesterday and give me a litt insight and tour of Pineview. Greatly appreciated. So we managed to get up there at about 6:00 or so (not sure water temp?). I was in my tube and Hookjaw in his new toon. Man, what a sweet toy that is, can't say I'm not jealous!

Anyhow, start out without much luck. We're both targeting smallies or the elusive (for some) tiger muskie. I'm throwing all kinds of swim baits, cranks, tubes, jigs with little action. Couple nibbles on the tubes. Managed to find a spot with tons of perch and some bluegill, but that can only be fun for a little. Keep moving along to edge and hookjaw is a little further up. I've got on a glass perch colored rapala and am doing a twitch and stop retreive when it gets nailed. My drag is reeling and I'm sure I've got a nice tiger muskie on. After a couple minutes, I catch a glance and think maybe I've got a huge smallie?! Then, the realization sets with a good look and I've realized a big ol' carp has nailed my crankbait.. sigh.. Tons of fun, fight lasted at least five minutes, took plenty of line, but I wanted that muskie. Matt came over and took a picture for me and couldn't believe that a carp would strike my bait, he was asking if I had side or foul hooked the thing, but I was assuring him he tried to gobble it up.

Anyhow, shortly after that we began moving back when I got another huge hit that began taking line. I went throught the same thought process entirely, right up to being dismayed when I saw I got another big carp. This time, I got a picture with the lure in its mouth to prove I ain't just snagging these beasts.

After that, no more reportable action and made our way back in. Fun evening but wished we could've gotten into some desired fish. I think I'm bad luck for Matt. When I left Flaming Gorge on our trip out there, he got into a 6lb rainbow that night... Anyhow, couple pics of the slime beasts are attached for your viewing pleasure.

Hahaha... Nice report! Sorry I didn't get your message you left me until about 10pm.

I have had that happen about 5 times in that same area at Pineview.... I always think musky, and then I am completely dissapointed. [Sad]

Did you land any smallies at all??? They are usually thick in that area, and are pretty easy to catch.

Anyway, again, nice report. We need to get out fishin again. [cool]

Good times. Next time I need to get me a basket so I can keep some of those little panfish. Flycastin's mom makes some killer perch nuggets!!!

NP w/ not calling back. I managed to work that out.

Seems like a great area for smallies, but didn't get a one?! Had a lot of bites though that I wasn't able to hook. Might've just been perch or baby smallies. Those little fish still haven't learned how to bite my tube jigs correctly!

Seems the smallie fishing everywhere (at least EC for sure) is tough right now (for me at least). I haven't fished tube jigs a whole lot in the past but have been using them with pretty good success at EC lately. They get plenty of hits, but often the hook set can be tricky or just fleeting. Need more practice I guess [Wink]!

Oh yea, those perch would've been delicious. I'd like to get a basket full of blue gill and fry some of those up too!

Bluegills are mighty tatsy too!

How are you rigging the tube? I have had much better success on a split shot rig up there compared to a lead head. [cool]

We would have caught a lot of smallies if we had some of those maniac reapers or the salt stix. We'll get 'em next time for sure and maybe a tiger or two.
