This coming weekend, June 9th and 10th is Michigan's annual Summer Free Fishing Weekend. For these two special days only, all fishing license fees will be waived for residents and non-residents on both inland and Great Lake waters. All regulations will still apply. This is a great opportunity to pass on Michigan's fishing tradition to an entirely new generation of anglers. If the weather cooperates, fishing opportunities around the state look good for the weekend.

Southeast Lower Peninsula
Lake Erie - Fishing slowed in Michigan waters and was better just over the border in Canadian waters. In Michigan, the better walleye fishing was near Stony Point. Fish were hitting on bottom bouncers and purple crawler harnesses. A few perch were also caught. Freshwater drum and white bass are hitting in good numbers.
Detroit River - Walleye can still be found in the river but anglers will need to work for them. Limit catches were still reported once the fish are located. Most are using crawler harnesses with bottom bouncers. The river is full of white bass.
Black River - Smallmouth bass, white bass and some large northern pike have been caught at the mouth.
St. Clair River - It seems the walleye have moved out into lower Lake Huron. Anglers starting out just north of the Bluewater Bridge are drifting down to the bridge then moving back out into the lake. Most are drifting crawler harnesses.
Lakeport - Some nice 10 to 14 inch perch have been caught in 15 to 30 feet of water when using crappie rigs and minnows. Even the dead minnows caught fish. Boat anglers are taking chinook and coho when trolling 40 to 60 feet down in waters 70 to 90 feet deep. Lots of lake trout have also been caught.
Lexington - Salmon and trout fishing is really good right now, but few anglers are taking advantage of it. Boats trolling in 60 to 80 feet of water are taking a mix of chinook, lake trout, steelhead and pink salmon. Pier anglers are taking a variety of species including smallmouth bass, rock bass, pike, largemouth bass, and bluegills.
Port Sanilac - Also has very good trout and salmon fishing in 60 to 80 feet of water.
Grindstone City - Small coho have been caught off Lighthouse Park which is about 4 miles southeast of Grindstone City. The fish are full of minnows and mayfly wigglers. Smallmouth bass fishing has been very good.
Port Austin - Has very good smallmouth bass fishing.
Saginaw Bay - Walleye fishing continues to be red hot all over the inner part of the bay. The water has warmed to the point that the fish are being taken on Hot-n-Tots and thundersticks as well as crawler harnesses. Planer boards are almost a necessity, as the water has been very clear. Best lure colors are silver/blue or silver/green. Hot spots include the Pinconning Bar, Buoys G, H, and A off Linwood, the Spark Plug, the shipping channel and Slot off Quanicassee, off Finn Road, the Slot off Sebewaing, and the islands and Slot off Bay Port.
Tittabawassee River - As walleye fishing comes to an end, anglers are now targeting and catching smallmouth bass.
Southwest Lower Peninsula
St. Joseph - Boat anglers are fishing 70 to 90 feet down in waters 150 to 200 feet deep. Spoons have caught the most fish. Look for perch in 30 to 40 feet of water over the rocks which are located both north and south of the piers.
St. Joseph River - The fish ladder was opened on June 4th. The Fish Cam will be down indefinitely due to computer problems.
South Haven - Has good perch fishing straight out from the pier. Fish minnows right off the bottom in 50 feet of water.
Kalamazoo River - Walleye are still being caught but the fishery is slowing down. Anglers can also catch smallmouth bass, rock bass and carp.
Holland - Boat anglers are fishing 50 to 80 feet down in waters 170 to 220 feet deep as the fish have been scattered. Perch are hitting on minnows just off the bottom in 40 feet of water. Pier anglers have caught walleye at night.
Lake Macatawa - Has good crappie and bluegill fishing.
Grand Haven - Boats are trolling for trout and salmon but the fish are scattered. Good perch fishing both north and south of the piers when fishing minnows just off the bottom in waters 50 feet deep.
Reeds Lake - Bass are hitting on spinner baits and purple rubber worms. Bluegills can be found near the beds or the drop offs. Crappies are in 10 to 15 feet of water.
Grand River at Grand Rapids - Walleye have been caught about a mile below the Thornapple River when drifting glow-in-the-dark crawlers. Lots of channel and flathead catfish have been caught. Pike are hitting on body baits. Smallmouth bass fishing has been good. Bluegills and crappie have been caught up and down the east wall when using minnows. Those fishing Millennium Park have caught bluegills, pike and bass.
Grand River at Lansing - Walleye have been caught at Moore's Park. This is a good time to go fishing for bass, bluegills, crappie, catfish and carp.
Lake Lansing - Anglers are catching northern pike.
Muskrat Lake - Bass are hitting on gray rubber rats. Anglers can also try for crappie, sunfish and perch. If water levels are low at the boat launch, only those fishing from small craft will be able to access the lake.
Looking Glass River - Is a good place to fish for bluegills, crappie, bass, northern pike and carp. Some large bowfin can also be caught.
Lake Ovid - Anglers are catching bluegills on worms and black spiders. Largemouth bass are hitting purple worms, crawlers, minnows and small bluegills.
Muskegon - Catch rates have been sporadic as the fish seem scattered.
Muskegon Lake - The bluegills are starting to bed. Anglers will need to sort out the small ones. A few perch have also been caught. The bass are just about done spawning and are hitting in 6 to 8 feet of water. Walleye have been caught at night when fishing the breaklines with crawlers and leeches.
Whitehall - Fishing has finally picked up in waters 120 to 150 feet deep as the fish are moving in. Boat anglers are taking a good mix of fish when using dipsy divers and lead core. Bass were caught off the pier.
Northeast Lower Peninsula
Rogers City - Reported excellent lake trout fishing off Calcite Harbor, Adams Point, Seagull Point, and up by the State Park and Forty Mile Point Light when fishing about 5 feet off the bottom in waters 35 to 80 feet deep. The suspended fish are hitting on spoons in green, yellow, blue, gold, black and orange.
Presque Isle - Has great fishing in the North Bay, off Big Lighthouse Point, and in front of the pavilion. Again, fish the bottom 5 feet in waters 30 to 80 feet deep, using the same techniques and colors as Rogers City.
Rockport - Lake trout are also being caught around Middle Island and at the Nine Mile Can in 40 to 75 feet of water. A few chinook and atlantic salmon are in the area, but not many have been caught.
Thunder Bay River - Anglers are catching walleye during the evening hours, between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. Artificial baits, crawlers, and leeches have all been working. Rock bass, smallmouth bass, and channel catfish have also been caught.
Fletchers Pond - Is producing northern pike, largemouth bass and panfish.
Grass Lake - In Montmorency County has good bass fishing.
Otsego Lake - Some nice walleye have been caught.
Harrisville - Limits of lake trout have been taken when trolling in 55 to 60 feet of water and using various colors.
Oscoda - Boat anglers have taken lake trout in 100 feet of water. Pier anglers are catching largemouth bass on spinners and catfish on crawlers.
Au Sable River - It seems the walleye have moved up the river to deeper water. Anglers are fishing along the bank behind the bridge on US-23. Some are drifting crawlers while others are still-fishing. The brown drake hatches have been going strong on both the North Branch and the Main Branch near Mio and Grayling, so the fishing has been very good.
Tawas - Walleye and lake trout have been caught in 50 feet of water off Tawas Point. Smallmouth bass fishing has been excellent with some 3 to 5 pound fish taken on tube baits along the rocky areas of the bay.
Au Gres - Walleye fishing has been amazing with fish taken in waters 30 to 35 feet deep. Excellent smallmouth bass fishing reported around the Charity Islands.
Higgins Lake - Lake trout have been caught in 100 feet of water when trolling spoons. Brown trout were caught in 65 to 70 feet of water. Perch are hitting in the early evening in 35 to 40 feet of water west of Treasure Island.
Houghton Lake - Look for walleye in the early morning or after dark. Bass can be found both in the shallows and out deep. Try casting tube baits, spinners, rubber worms, or small bluegills.
Northwest Lower Peninsula
Thumb Lake (Lake Louise) - Anglers targeting splake are still-fishing the eastern basin near the shallow flats. Fish have been caught when using minnows or spawn in 50 feet of water. Those targeting large and smallmouth bass in the shallows are casting tubes, jigs, crawlers, minnows, crankbaits and spinners from the shoreline to 12 feet of water on the west side of the lake. Fly fishing in the shallows has also been productive. Perch and rock bass have been caught on minnows and crawlers.
Traverse City - Fishing has been great for lake trout in the East Bay. Limit catches were taken near Yuba, the launch at Dock Road and off Elk Rapids when using spoons in 50 feet of water. Portage Lake - Good numbers of panfish are being caught on the south side of the lake, some in the shallows and some out in 10 feet of water. Bass have been caught along the drop offs and pike have been caught when trolling. Walleye fishing was best at night when fishing along the south shore and near the Inn.

Manistee Lake - Is producing good numbers of bluegill and sunfish. They are on the beds in shallow waters.
Hamlin Lake - Anglers are taking limit catches of bluegill in only a few hours.
Ludington - Pier anglers have not had any luck casting for salmon and trout. The bait is in the harbor, but the fish are not there yet. Rock bass have been caught along the outside of the North Pier. The head of the bay reported the best catches when jigging or trolling crawlers or minnows in 13 to 28 feet of water, but many of the fish are running small.
