As for your question, it really depends. I'd say if you're going after kings, a 4/0 sized reel. Check out this link:

That's a rod and reel combo for under 200 bucks. It has a super high speed gear ratio and it would be great for pier and boat alike. Plus, you can go right to basspro in N. Myrtle Bch and pick it up with out waiting. [cool]
20-30 pound line is just fine. You may want to go with 30 pound line. I suggest you go with Mono line, and Ande is about as good as Mono gets now a days.
You're also going to need an anchor rod and reel if you plan on float fishing. Something in the 10' length will work fine. The reel doesn't have to be anything special, but you need good line on it. Ande for this reel too, as you'll be slinging a heavy lead with nail in it out as far as you can toss it. I'll explain more in depth if you'd like.
