Premier Catalina Trip 7/1
#1
Hey there guys,

Rode the Premier today. Danny skippered, Mikie decked. and Deborah in the galley. Nice 3/4 Day Catalina Trip. Had squid in the tank from the night before and then we picked up some nice chovie and dines! Load was pretty light at 40. All kinds of familiar faces on the boat today.

Hit the front side of Catalina ASAP! We were rewarded with a couple of early Yellows along with an AM steady bite on barries and lots of calicos. Fished the squid sparingly early on as we didn't really see the wideopen bite that was there yesterday. Weather was great and remained so the entire day.

I didn't get touched by a single yellow the whole day.... course I only fished the dines and squid the first hour. After my buddy Jim got his firecracker on a Kalin swimbait, (pearlesent green w/dark green back) I didn't throw anything but plastic the rest of the day! ha ha No problemo ! The calicos didn't turn up their nose at my plastics even after the squid was being fished ... which sometimes happens. The little guys get spoiled and greedy sometimes I guess !

Some guys were getting yt bit on 40lb test... and here I am with my super-stelth rig and 25lb test flurocarbon leader for nada .... go figure !

The final boat score for yellows was 8.... with top fish going around 18 pounds. Others were pretty much firecrackers. Breezed through the areas on the frontside all day long.... kinda frustrating. I caught calicos throughout the day with a lot of cookie cutter 11 and 3/4 inch fish but not a few 2 pounders mixed in to make fishing for them worthwhile and reasonable. One of many things I like about Danny is that we won't pound a spot where it seems mostly smaller fish are biting. We'll move, and he's happy to throw lots of bait and bring the fish to the boat more often than not!

We moved around quite a bit looking for that sweet spot where the yellow would cooperate.... but for them it was scratch, scratch, and scratch. Happily ...sportcoats bit all day. he he he My best rig was a 3/8th oz yellow head attack leadhead and the clear w/brown tint and large sparkle 3 1/2 inch kalins. Threw the plastic as far as possible into the kelp..... let it sink 15 seconds and cranked.

Danny stayed out a little later today, I guess hoping for a late yt bite but we finally pulled the hook at 3:30 or 4pm (the wind had come up and was blowing pretty good) and headed home. Got back to the docks around 6pm or so.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST: The biggest yellowtail was caught by this kid that could not have been over 10 years old. Cool... hope he's hooked!

Again, lots of bird action and the bass were crashing in the kelp continually. Some yt in there too. Had one very friendly young sea lion around but not too much of an annoyance other than supressing the bite a little.

Great boat, crew, and today fished with quite a few of what is becoming Friday regulars. Again .....a kinder and gentler bunch of guys that are also excellent anglers!
