Catalina Trip 5/31
#1
Hey there guys,

Pierpoint's 3/4 day boat the Premier went to Catalina today. Danny and Jimmy ran the boat today. Deborah was again working in the galley. Took off with a fairly lite load, for the boat, and picked up some horse anchovies and some slimy sardines on our way out.

Fished the inside of the island and did well on the calicos including 3 huge breeder type guys caught, kept alive, and later sent on their way. Well..... actually my poor guy croaked! Looking for more and more little baby fishys next year.

We moved around a little but the bite was pretty steady wherever we dropped the hook. Caught lots of calicos.... on the anchovies, sardines, and suprisingly not too bad on the swimbaits. Most fly-lined a bait for good results but I stayed with a Carolina rig, a 1/4 ounce egg sinker, 4 feet of 15 pound test fluro and a number 1 size owner circle hook for bait and or a 3/8 ounce leadhead and Kalin 4" two tone green and silver metal flake for my swimbait.

Those circle hooks sure reduce the times you hang up in the kelp with the barb turned in like it is. May have spotted one dog and the birds didn't bug us either. Didn't see any yellows, just a few barracuda caught, and no bonito.

Overall good number and nice quality of fish.

Fished with some buddies, were treated like a king in the galley and had a nice clean, freshly washed down deck to fish off of the whole day.

Going out tomorrow too.... hope we go to Catalina.

That sounds like a nice trip JR. I'm glad to see that the inshore is picking up.

Hooray on the breeders too. It's always nice to see them go back. My son was scolded by an old timer once for letting his 9# Calico go back. My son simply told the old geezer " I'm sorry sir. I caught the fish, so I have the choice to let it live or be a ruthless killer"!

I think the old guy learned something from that.[cool]
