Premier Trip to Catalina 5/11
#1
Hey there guys,

Went out on the 3/4 day Premier out of Pierpoint landing with the usual group of great club memebers and assorted regulars. Danny skippered the boat with Jimmy doing 2nd ticket and deck duties. Bill was in the galley with his usual great chow!

Picked up some nice anchovies and a few sardines and headed for the inside of Catalina. Early morning gve us clear, sunny, warm weather, calm water and a decent current to fish fairly shallow water and the kelp strands that often passed thru the area. Water color was not the best but the fish didn't seem to mind. Well ...... I guess the yellows did !!

Had a great bite on plastics for initially dink calico bass but enough keepers started showing to make the effort worthwhile and ethical. The bite does seem to build pretty good recently.... seems ya just gotta work it and be patient. Note: The Premier makes the right call and dosen't hang around and kill dinks just for the sake of action if it doesn't seem the grade will get bigger. Kudos to both Danny and Jimmy!

Also had a good extended bait bite on the boneheads. They
weren't giant but still decent action on light tackle. Caught a number of both short as well as legal barracuda mostly on bait. The usual members of the cast (sheephead, whitefish, and opaleye) didn't show in any number if at all.

After the shallow water fishing, we turned the corner and fished deep for various rockfish. Everyone who wanted fish got a good heafty bag to take home. Excellent rock fishing. I don't rockfish so I go sit in the galley and watch these very unique day-time programs that have a parade of rather different people and lifestyles. Nice to have that big ol' tv for those that want to take a break or check out the news on the way from the island. Got back to the dock around 6:30pm.

Good boat, great crew, productive fishing ......and fun group!
