I didnt see it, and am wondering why they were trying to stuff the smallies through the small hole? I dont understand the netting process, but what was the purpose of the netting? and who is in charge of these nettings? I would like to understand the process and get involved. I know that some nettings are done to survey predator / prey relationships, and fish populations, as well as to occasionally remove some fish. Were the participants biologists or just uneducated volunteers?

I think as a fisheman I dislike very much the use of gill nets. As a conservationist I understand there need. There are many reason for this gil netting. Health of the fishery come to mind. Whirling is running wild in Jordanelle. Check sz and number of fish. Did you know that they gill net the exact same spot each year? This gives them a clearer picture of the overal population and its , health, sz, number, age and ratio to other fish, minnows to trout, bass, ect. It's a pretty complex process and takes into account just about everything you can think of. Now withot ths there may not be a fihery for us to go. I know the visual image of a net full cold , dead, stiff game fish. Is not the image I like seeing. Tht is one of the reasons the fish limit is set were it is, they know how many fish are ther, how lucky or unlucky we fishermen are. So they make an educated guess on the limit. In the last 25 years almost al DWR's Nation wide will issue lower limits than the fishery will tolerate. When you see a lake that has higher limits, it is becaue they fell it is over populated and must be reduce. They even close lakes when they feel the fishery is in danger. This my friend is what appears to be a needed evil. We as fishermen must keep doing our part by releasing as many as we can. They must do theirs and keep them healthy and viable for us. Keep this in mind also, they do not plant thropy fish, we do! My son watched me release a 9 pound cut this morning. As it swam slowly into the sun, he said to me "now thats' what I'm talking about. Is there any thing better than that." I hope he catches that fish next year, because now I know it will be there again for you. DWR can not afford to do that only we can. Just my opinion though, and you what what they say about opinions.[cool]

Very interesting road. I didnt realize that they net the same area and had totally forgotten about the whirling disease. I agree with you on the trophy fish thing, its the same as trophy deer, cant grow them big when you kill all the little ones. congrats on the cutt, thats a big one. Thanks for the info. I would like to see the results of the recent gill netting at jordanelle, is the info up on the DWR web page?

I learned a lot today in trying to get some answers on how this is done. Whether I've just been naive or ignorant, I always thought gill net samplings were non-lethal. Wrong. I learned they're a necessary evil and a valuable management tool.
I'll see if I can also find out how we anglers can participate in these samplings.

I've helped with them at strawberry a few times. It's worth doing into opinion.

Gill netting is a science. It is a valuable tool to determine the health of a fishery. Nets can be floaters or sinkers, depending on what kind of sample is wanted. The mesh size of the net also determines the size of the fish sampled. If the mesh size is to large, they swim right through, if to small they are unable to get larger fish. Most of the nets the DWR uses are graded in size so that they can sample all sizes of fish.
In Deer Creek, they used nothing but floating nets for years and were not sampling the bass and walleye. Charlie Thompson began putting in some sinkers and that is how he was able to sample the bass and walleye populations and determine what was going on with them.
While it looks bad, the number of fish sacrificed in the nets is very small in comparison to fisherman take natural mortality. The information they collect will be analysed and collated to give the managers a very good picture of what is going on in the fishery.
To get a better picture of the process, go spend a day or two helping. You will get a better appreciation for the process.

Lol, I was curious to see if anyone would actually notice that little fact.

What about the Lake Mary Macs? Shame to see them kill a 9lber this year in a gill net survey.

Um, don't you know - Zombies are IN now. Way popular.
Amazes me that Walking Dead is PG-13. Guess gore isn't as offensive as a little skin exposure.
As for zombie fishes in gill nets - don't think there's any intent on C&R during gill net studies. Wouldn't mind being present if there was a Salmon gill net study! Hmmmm.
