Fished this afternoon with aK and the son. Got there just about 4:30. Boat was in, wife had a day with some girl friends so it was all set for us.

we fished just down wind from the tree clusters in the NW area for a while marking a lot of fish and catching a few small perch.then we headed for the Rock arm. We fished the first big bay on the south with limited success. Several perch on slip bobbered worms and chartruse foxies in 1/8 but that was about it. Sombody talk to me about Senkos. what are they and how do you fish them?

Ak had a ball, he's never had a good rod and reel before, his girl just bought him a really nice Shimano rod and reel. He is feeling those bait stealing bites now and was loving it.

A bunch of small perch but no bass. I want to learn about catching them before I have to put the boat away.

You can purchase senkos at sportmans wharehouse. They are made by Gary Yamamoto, chartreuse and smoke are good colors. I would recomend a 3 or 4 inch senko. Rig them on EWG Gamakatsu Weedless hooks, 2/O should be a good size for a 4 incher.
Now just cast out you bait and let it fall to the bottom. Keep a close eye for bites on the drop that's usually when they'll bite. Once the baits is on the bottom you can let it chill for a moment, or jig it. I take my rod from the 9 o'clock position to the 12 o'clock position then back to the 9 to jig, don't real in your slack cause usually you have just pulled your bait into deeper water so you need the slack to get your bait back down to the bottom.
And Repeat........
When you get a bite reel the slack, and set the hook like a mutha.

Scartinez nailed the basics of fishing a Senko. Good explanation.

One thing I like to do is rig them wacky which means just a hook right through the middle of the worm. Google "wacky senko" for a picture of this style. I like a size 1 split shot circle Gammy hook for that rig.

Also, check out maniaccustomlures.com for a local guy that makes an excellent Senko knockoff, but at a lower prices with customizable baits.

Because of Predator, I use 1/0's for 4 inchers and 2/0's for 5". We usually texas rig with 1/8 or 3/16 oz bullet weights. Also, we use 3/16th texas rigged with our tubes. I usually get my Yamamoto's direct from the factory so I can get colors, sizes, and types right. Just go to www. Baits.com for you Yamamoto needs. In addition, James at Maniaclures.com is fast in delivery and does an excellent job on his products.
