Blue River
#1
FISHING: Fair
Current Conditions

Flow: 52 cfs below Dillon

Clarity: Excellent below the dam, but deteriorates as feeder creeks enter just above Silverthorne on warm days. Clarity will change daily with the different weather patterns.

Water Temperature: High 30’s to low 40’s

Major Food Organisms: Midges, caddis, and baetis

Hatches: Midges, caddis, and baetis

14 Day Forecast: Look for flows to range between 50-100 cfs for the next several weeks from the base of Dillon Dam. Anglers will begin to see signs of run-off on warmer days, as the feeder creeks begin to swell, and the lower river dis-colors. The first creek is only 100 yards below the Dam, and can cause major discoloration of the river. This creek can double the flow with muddy water.

Tips and Other Information: Fishing remains productive on the Blue River in the town of Silverthorne. Below Dillon Dam fish with your standard tail water selections: #22 Black Beauty’s, #20 Brassie, #22 Mercury Baetis, #22 Sparkle Wing RS II, #18 Micro San Juan Worms, #22 Brown WD 40’s, #18 Beadhead Breadcrust, and #22 Smith’s Baetis. A Hot Pink San Juan Worm fishes very well in off-colored water. In town (between Town Hall and the Dam), sight nymphing is mandatory if you plan on being successful. The lower river is now fishing fair to good, however; the clarity can change from day to day with different weather patterns. Fish are eating small Pheasant Tails, and RS II’s, and a standard assortment of small bead heads (#18 Copper Johns, #18 Princes, #18 Bead head Breadcrust, #18 P.T.’s). A #16 Chartreuse Copper John is a great choice this time of year with all the caddis moving. There are several rising fish to blue wing olives in the slow slack areas.

Effective Patterns: #16-18 Mysis Shrimp, #14 Pink San Juan Worm, #22 Mercury Blood Midge, #20-22 Mercury Midge, #8 Stonefly Nymphs, #18 Mercury Pheasant Tail, #22 Baetis Nymph, #22 Brassie, #20-22 Black Beauty, #20 Blood Midge, #18 Bead Head Prince, #18 Bead Head Breadcrust, #18 Bead Head Pheasant Tails, and #20-22 WD 40 Brown
