A pair of Las Vegas anglers who visited the lake over the weekend said they had very good success, even though they had to endure rain and strong winds. They caught rainbow trout that weighed up to 3 pounds with live night crawler worms that were injected with air to float them above the bottom of the lake. The fish were also biting on PowerBait.

The lake was recently planted with rainbow trout and most the fish that are now being caught are the planters.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife is continuing its heavy spring stocking schedule with the most recent rainbow trout plant taking place last Friday (4/23/04). This has produced good fishing for the planter fish as well as an occasional brown trout.
The campground continues to do brisk business. Temperatures on the area are becoming warmer with the highs reaching the 70s.

Stocked rainbow trout are being caught along with white crappie and small largemouth bass. Flies are taking the crappie while PowerBait, live worms and flies are catching the trout.
With the arrival of warm weather, fishing has been showing signs of gradual improvement with the lake’s Overton Arm being the most productive area for striped bass and channel catfish.

Over the weekend, Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) creel census clerks checked a number of striped bass that weighed up to 3 pounds that were caught at Stewart’s Point, Fish Island, St. Thomas and Fire Cove. Boaters caught the fish by drifting with cut anchovies.

Largemouth bass fishing has been fairly good in the Overton Arm with several boaters reporting to NDOW that they had success around Fish Island and Stewart’s Point.

Even though the fishing has been slower in the Boulder Basin, anglers who have been persistent have managed to catch stripers. There have been reports that fish have been caught near the tires at Lake Mead Marina and at Vegas Wash.

Fairly good action was found during the weekend at Cottonwood Cove with anglers having fairly good success for largemouth and striped bass.

Boaters who were fishing on the Arizona side of the lake about three miles below
Cottonwood Cove Marina had good luck on Sunday for stripers that weighed well under a pound to over 3 pounds. The fish were caught with anchovies.

Largemouth bass are in coves and are biting on artificial worms, jig and pig combinations and tube lures.

Very few anglers and slow fishing continue to be found around Willow Beach.

This week’s arrival of warm weather, combined with recent rainbow trout plants, should make for a big improvement in the fishing.

Over the weekend, fishing was slow and the conditions were poor due to cold and windy weather. NDOW creel census clerks only checked seven trout on Saturday (4/24/04). No largemouth bass have been seen in the creel.

Campers should be prepared for evening temperatures that are in the low 30s. Daytime highs have been in the low 70s.

Cave Lake, Comins Lake and Illipah Reservoir are now free of ice and the trout fishing has been fairly good at all of the lakes, according to Chris Crookshanks, NDOW biologist.

Rainbow trout that weigh 3 to 4 pounds are being caught at Comins, which is located approximately seven miles south of Ely adjacent to U.S. 93. Illipah, located west of Ely, has had good fishing for rainbow trout that were stocked last year. NDOW will stock the three lakes with rainbow trout within two weeks.

Local anglers reported good success for recently stocked catfish. The fish were taken with an assortment of bait, but night crawlers seemed to be the preferred bait.
