Oregon Fisheries Update
April 2nd – April 8th , 2004
Tune into Bitsy Kelly's Outdoor radio show on KUIK am 1360 this Saturday (4/3/04) at 10AM to hear all that is going on with The Guide's Forecast and our local fisheries. Bob taped with Bitsy this week and there is much to cover in our favorite part of NW Oregon. She produces a great radio show that all outdoor enthusiasts should pay attention to!
Fishing on the North Coast is beginning to wind down although a few more good weeks of steelhead fishing is a real possibility. The rivers will become more barren of effort as spring chinook season heats up and some hatchery steelhead are still being taken on the Wilson River. Anglers need to make sure to check their regulation booklet as many north coast streams close to steelhead fishing to protect wild stocks and juvenile salmonids as they make their way to the ocean beginning this month.
Bottom fishing remains excellent offshore. Crabbing is productive in bays and estuaries.
Fishing at most South coast streams is slow. A few steelhead are being taken in the Siletz. the Umpqua which is just starting up on smallmouth also offers steelhead, sturgeon and a springer season barely underway. Anglers on the Rogue River are still awaiting the chinook run to get underway in earnest, but it has started. In the interim, steelheaders are taking winter fish up high on the river.
Many South Coast streams are closed to angling from April 1st through May 22nd including the South Fork Umpqua, South Fork Coos, Elk, Sixes, Coquille and Chetco Rivers.
The nets are out of the Columbia ... at least for now. The only thing the impede the springer's progress now is you! Do so with trolled herring, prawn rigs or bait-wrapped Kwikfish. The Deschutes River opens April 1st to chinook angling from the mouth to Sherars Bridge.
Willamette springer fishing showed an upswing in the last couple of days and will continue to improve. After all, we're just entering the season. Finding current for anchor fishing on the Willamette will be challenging until the next decent tidal series which won't occur until the second week in April.
Locations scheduled for stocking this week include Devils Lake, Blue River Reservoir, Dexter Reservoir, Dorena Reservoir, Freeway Lake East, Timber Linn Lake , Walling Pond, Walter Worth Lake , Canby Pond and Huddeston Pond.
