Heya Southernman,

I just got back from Haymeadow last night. The report was right, I caught over 30 fish and was able to selectively keep a nice limit of 5. I had 3 buddies with me and they were all bait fishing. Didn't do quite as well as I did, but they all managed to catch a limit. Worms, powerbait and marshmallows were what they used.

I played around with various flys, but a size 16 chironomid pattern was the ticket for me today. I even managed to catch a couple of small bass with it. I only got within earshot of the dam a few times, but from the brief snatches of conversation I heard it seemed as if that area wasn't fishing all that well. A couple of guys told me the bite was off as Cold Springs as well, but I didn't fish it myself.

I wish I'd of read this post before I went, I would surely have invited you.

Later,
Mark

[cool]Hey Telbone way to go. I'm going to have to try that place real soon. I'm heading to the eastern sierras of Calif. tonight. Going to spend a few days fishing the lower Owens wild trout section outside of Bishop and Pleasant Valley res. I need to loosen up the fly casting arm and try the flies I tied up over the winter. I'll report when I get back.

well i went to Kirch WMA Monday Afternoon, never been there, man thats a lonely drive . . . theres like two gas stations for 150 miles, but oh well i made it, decided to try the first lake cold springs reservoir, cause I had no reports to go on . . . beautiful day, low 70's light breeze . .[Image: cold1.jpg] I checked out the lake at the boat ramp knowing its about 9 foot at its deepest, and was amazed at the amount of green funk growing from the bottom up to about 6 inches from the surface, the water was nice and clear, and seemed in the 60's not very cold at all . . [Image: cold3.jpg] so i went to the little parking lot by the levee . . one set of folks came in as i left, said they caught nothing . . the problem was the floating dead vegetation that went out over 20 feet from shore, making fishing aggravating as hell . . [Image: cold2.jpg] well i rigged up with worms and powerbait cause it was 2 pm already and i just wanted to fish after a 3 hr drive (185 miles from my house in vegas) - I fished for about 45 minutes before deciding to try Haymeadow, when I got a fat spawning 18 inch rainbow football . . [Image: cold_trout.jpg] so I hung out another 20 minutes, then went to haymeadow, same deal, basically no place to fish except the dam side and the 1/4 mile or so walk just to get there . . gotta bring some buddies to carry the coolers and tacklebox next time . . and they're were already 5 sets of fisherpeople parties lining the dam, and I didnt want to squeeze in, so i checked out the other lake again from the boat ramp . . fished another hr with no luck and headed back to vegas . . I saw 5 or 6 boats and 10 tubers on haymeadow, with only 2 boats and 2 tubers on cold springs . . seems like haymeadow is the lake of choice! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- VIDEO http://getyourwebsite.biz/cold.ram -high speed for cable & dsl http://getyourwebsite.biz/cold1.rm - part 1 for modems http://getyourwebsite.biz/cold2.rm - part 2 for modems http://getyourwebsite.biz/cold3.rm - part 3 for modems http://getyourwebsite.biz/cold4.rm - part 4 for modems -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- id like to try haymeadow out for an entire day with a few guys, and maybe hike all the way around to the other side . . .i wouldnt think 99% of the people hike all the way over there . .so the fishing is prob prettty good, and it looked fairly clear for shore fishing . . . prob a few spots with no vegetation choking everything . . these are ideally lakes to fish from small boat or tube . . Southernman,

You nailed it. These lakes are mostly for float tubers or boats. The dams can be productive at times, but as you said it's a hike. I used my boat this time and it was nice to be able to cover the lake and find the fish. Also it will be too choked with weeds by early summer to bother with it, so if you fish it do so now. It's been my experience, and that of some of my buddies that EITHER Haymeadow is on or Cold Springs is on. I'm sure there's been times when both are productive, but never when I'm there. If you don't catch fish at one of them in an hour or so, move to the other. Just an observation, take it for what it's worth. I'd strongly suggest a boat or float tube. As the weeds fill in fish pockets.

If I'm confined to the bank, then I'd hit Baker Reservoir outside of St. George. The drive is quicker, and the road is much better compared to that rutted horror show leading to Sunnyside. They stock it with rainbow, though I'd not use powerbait. I'd go with a bubble injected worm floating near the bottom there. Some bigger browns come down outta the Santa Clara river into baker and you want to give yourself every opportunity to catch one.

Also, the ice is off of Echo res. in Spring Valley. It offers much better bank opportunities as well. I sure would like to see that res fill up again. A few years back before I started fly fishing, I'd run smaller rattle traps in early spring and tear up trout and bass alike there.

Later,
Mark

thanks, but baker dam res used to be a favorite place of mine in feb and march, but they quit stocking it until april now, (they say the commorants eat all of the fish) which isnt much good to me since by that time im heading to higher elevations for some real fish . . i used to have a lot of fun there, caught a couple nice browns there too, heres a decent one from last year . . [Image: brown2.jpg] [Image: brown1.jpg] also since enterprise, gunlock, and sand cove res have been off cause of water shortages, baker's got a lot of pressure the last two years, and i believe last year they stocked about 6000 fish, which is ridiculous . . . Hey nice report. I need a new camera so I can take movie clips.

I'll second that Baker sucks. I've already fished it three times this year and we all got skunked. I've only seen one fish caught in about 20 hrs of fishing.

Hey southernman I'm going to make a trip up the mtn. to check the run off and see if anything is fishable yet. Hopefully enough water has filled that lake and I can do some fly fishing. I'll let you know how it goes.

Ya that lake does look like some good tubing and fly fishing. Weeds and moss is great for fly fishing but sucks for bait.

I didn't realize Baker had declined so badly. I used to fish it a few years back and did quite well. Last year I hit it once and caught 4 in an hour of fishing. I probably hit it after a stocking though, I usually check such things before I hit a lake.
