[/url]PICKS OF THE WEEK
1. Lake Castaic is kicking out some good sized stripers right now on trout swimbaits. A 43-1 was landed by Robert Flaata, Palmdale, breaking the lake record. Many other stripers from 10-0 to 15-8 have shown for anglers trolling or casting swimbaits. The largemouth bite at the lake continues to be rock solid through all types of weather. Anglers fishing swimbaits, crawdads, or drop-shotting plastics are scoring easy limits of bass to 5-0.
2 Catfish action at San Vicente picked up and a blue catfish over 70-0 was landed last week. Fishing for big blues calls for 20-pound line minimum, with many anglers preferring 30-pound. Big pieces of mackerel fished on big hooks at the buoy line has been best bet. Channel catfish are also on the chew, with limits of fish going 50-0 not uncommon.
3. Two major fishing shows this weekend. The huge Fred Hall Fishing Tackle and Boat Show (www.fredhall.com) is ongoing today through Sunday at the Long Beach Convention Center, and the smaller but more niche-specific Fly Fishing Show (www.flyfishingshow.com) will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Ontario Convention Center. Lots of great tackle and trip deals and both will get you charged up about the coming spring fishing.
