Chinook salmon fishing has been constant this past week in both Barkley Sound and closer to Ucluelet around Great Bear and Sail Rock. The weather has been up and down, meaning we have been confined to fish Barkley Sound, but the fishing there has been good. Every spring and summer, large amounts of herring and other bait fish will school up in the protected waters. Some years the fishing is better than others. This year’s early season fishing so far has been as good or better than the past few. Fish are taking 3-3.5 inch Coyote and Silver Horde spoons from 60 feet to right on the bottom. You can expect 2-8 salmon per 8-hour trip right now. There are also lingcod around as well for those looking to get some white meat. We expect to be catching halibut soon too, but as yet haven’t fished for them. Last year fishing was very good in April and based on how fishing was in March this year, I would expect April 2017 to be even better. We have heated boats for the early spring weather, which can be variable.
