S.F. Snake Help

Finally going to fish the SF of the Snake on the 27th.
Never have fished it before and Im asking for what flies I will need to stock up on.
Going to launch at Conan and float down to Heise area.
Not going with a guide, my in-law will be taking me down the river.
If needed, I have different rod weights 3, 5, 6, and 8.
Looking for some insight to make the day worth it.

Riffles: PMD Thorax Dun 16-18, Pmd Biot Emerger 16-18, PMD Para-spinner 16-18, Pink Albert Para-spinner 16, Rusty Spinner 16, Purple Haze 16-18, Williams Transitional Dun 16-18, Brooks Flexwing Baetis 18-20, Baetis Parachute 20.

Banks: Super Chernobyl Brown or Yellow 8-10, CFO Flamer Ant Yellow or Pink 8-10, CFO Ant Flesh 6-8, Plan B 8-10, More or Less Hopper 10-12.

Streamers: Galloup’s Sex Dungeon, Peanut envy, Kreelex Minnow, Sparkle Minnow, Sculpzilla, JJ Special, Complex Twist Bugger, El Sculpito, Prince of a Bugger.


When I haven't been fishing it his reports are usually a really good starting point.

Jimmy's report is the next best thing to buying a guide a drink or two.
I'll help out with the rod choice.
3wt- leave it at home. You won't boat that photo fish.
5wt- rigged with a 14/16 parachute you can always see. It'll get the first cast and random strikes. Drop a 18 emerger for the rising fish.
6wt- rigged with a big foam rubber legs and a big poly wing so it Lands upright. If it gets refused clip it and see if it helps. Add a big heavy nymph if you like catching trees, whitys, and maybe a huge brown.
8wt- bring it in the car. If it's overcast, off color, or you can't share a 6 or 7wt streamer set up, rig it and decide if it's the 5 or 6wt that stays behind. Too many rigged rods in the boat is a cluster, and if you don't rig it you won't use it.
The SF has fished well this summer even with all the hot weather. Hope it stays that way through your trip.

Solid advice.

And I would agree on the Jimmys comment. When I lived up there and was hitting it 2-3 times a week all summer I would look at his reports and they would be spot on for what I was hammering fish with.

Not sure if his location is what limits their growth but of the 5 western states Ive lived in its my favorite shop and people. Always willing to lend a bit of advice but only when asked and 0 arrogance whenever Ive stopped in.

Another method that is grossly overlooked up there when youre stopped in a spot is swinging wets. The last year I lived there I switched to it almost exclusively and the average size of fish I was catching went up. The go to flys for swinging was a 8 mackay special and then 2 feet behind it a hare's ear with a bead in a 10 or 12. Cast perp. and mend down river to get it sink and then when it hits 45 degrees let it pull tight and start to swing it, then once its directly down stream strip it in like a streamer. It imitates rising nymphs and day in and day out it was very effective. Fish will hit it both on the swing and stripping. Something to give a try. Sandy/Lady mites and other various caddis emergers with weight were very effective also.
