Kicker motor fuel tank question
#1
Folks im running a Merc 9.8 kicker motor and i was going to put the 3 gallon gas tank for it inside of what is essentially a tupperware container to save the upholstry. My only concern was if that would create any kind of issue in terms of static electricity. I know that putting a metal tank in a pickup truck bed that has a rhinoliner in it can cause the tank to be charged and ignite the fumes. Anyone else doing that?

Why do you think the gas tank would damage your upholstery? Why don't you just connect it to your main engine fuel tank?

Its brand new white upholstry with an older metal gas tank thatnwill leave rust on thenseat. The kicker is a 2 cycle so it cant connect to the main tank.

OK, then just put an old towel under it. Gas tanks rarely leak, as long as you don't fill them up in that location. Can you take a picture of what this area of you boat looks like. Maybe there is another location to store the tank. Is your main motor an inboard or outboard?

When I purchased a new bass tracker with a Mercury optimax as the main motor and a 9.9 Mercury kicker I thought they would all be hooked up to the boats main tank. The dealer said it wouldn't be a good idea because of "pressure issues" with the Optimax. Anyway I have been running the kicker with the 3 gallon plastic tank with no issues on carpet or upholstery.

Hey got a pic of that bass tracker with the kicker? I've been looking at what new boat to upgrade to and that was one of my questions.

I leave my boat at Strawberry, so no I don't have a picture of my boat right now. But I would be happy to answer any questions you have. Also could you tell me how to post pictures? A fishing story is just that (a story) without a picture.

When the box opens to type the message at the bottome between the box and the post reply button you will see a small window with the word browse next to it. Hit browse, find your photo on your phone, computer, tablet whichever you use. After choosing the photo click upload attachment. This may take a little depending upon the size of the pic. Do not check the inline box. There are other steps involved with this. Only a couple of browsers will let you post inline pics (IE and firefox). The window will change showing the pic has been uploaded, then all you do is hit post reply and the pic shows up as a link to open up.

Thanks wiper thats probably the easiset thing to. I just like the idea of the plastic container snce it can do double duty for holding the hose and spare oil etc. my main on this boat is a small block chev 350 inboard. Is it ok tomrun that type of engine with the outdrive up?

The easy answer would be to sell your 2 cycle kicker and upgrade to a 4 cycle motor but if that is not an option and you don't have a ledge to set the tank on, the towel or a throw rug is you best option, imo. What type of eng are you referring to when you say," that type of engine with the outdrive up?". If you are asking if it is ok to run you kicker with your outdrive up, I'd say yes but I'm not sure it would make a lot of difference. I never trim up my main motor while trolling with my kicker.

your dealer is full of it , you can put a separate pick up into the fuel tank for the kicker with no adverse affect to either motor.

He might be full of it, BUT, he knows far more about it than I do. All he said to me was with the optimax he wouldn't recoment doing it. I mentioned that the two motors wouldn't be used at the the same time, but he still recommended not doing it. It was no big deal to me so I'm using the little plastic tank with my 9.9 kicker.
