Fished the backyard today with lots of company. Started late at about 1pm, drilled a hole and set depth and after removing the depth finder while dropping the white paddle bug tipped with half a mealie got bit near the end of the drop and hooked a nice fish. After about a 3 minute see-saw fight I got cut off on the bottom of the ice hole without seeing the fish. Thought it might be a good afternoon. Drilled 4 more holes setting out 4 poles on jawjackers and jigging with the 5th rod. In 3 hours caught one chub on a tiger jig tipped with mealie.. Six guys set up next to me and seemed to get a few more bites than I did but landed only one chub in about the same time as I using nightcrawlers. One guy fishing away from us came bye to visit saying he had caught 1 nice trout and a few small planters early in the day. The group next to me packed it in and I moved out to where the guy that reported catching the trout had fished. Skimmed out the holes and dropped a white paddle bug and got a lite bite, set it in a jawjacker with no further action. Dropped a tiger jig down the next hole found bottom and got bit hooking a good fish. Landed a nice spawned out brown which I released.
fished a while longer catching a medium sized sucker. Overall a very slow day. Talked to one other single angler who caught a few small perch in the 4-5" range actively jigging with a flasher unit. Ice was 4-8" with 2" of snow crust and some slushy watery spots.

Beats Ririe. At least you can wet a line. I live in Idaho Falls and never fished the Shelly Pond. Where's it located?

It's located across the street from North Bingham County Recreation Area which is off exit 108 on I-15. From IF you would head south on I-15 and exit at 108 and turn left to head for Shelley, you will drop down to the Snake River and cross it on a bridge. The North Bingham Park will be on your right and there is a parking area on the left to access the river to the west or the Shelley Pond to your right. It connects to the Snake River on the north end.

Thanks for the directions. I may try it on Monday. Sounds like a variety of species, could be fun to catch and release.

Chillout, how does your back yard pond look with the recent warm temps and wind? Is there still some ice?

Sorry I didn't see your post till just now. Sounds like you did a little better after I left for work. I fished it again Tuesday and kept 10 perch between 6"-8" caught about 30 with 1 planter trout 10". When I saw your post I ran out and broke out a couple of holes and the ice was 9" in the first one and 10" in the second. There has been some water build up on top of the ice along the edges but it has mostly skimed over and slushed up between the ice and skim ice. Where you accessed the pond that extends about 15' from the edge but has solid ice under the skim and slush. It was nice to meet you and talk. I got called in to work again yesterday so only fished for a little while and caught 6 perch with 2 hitting the 6" mark. I'm headed out with a friend to fish it this afternoon.
