Hey there guys,
The California DFG has authorized Boat Limits as opposed to individual iimits, for both private boat and sportfishing/party-boat anglers.
This means that someone can continue fishing until the fish count has grown to where the total of fish on the boat equals everybody having legal limits. Possesion limits are still in force.
This is not good for the fishery but captains will be the ones that can deal with this. They can simply pull off a spot when a reasonable number of fish have been caught or go to spots that hold less fish!
What do you think?
Oregon and Washington already have had these policys in force.

as for a privet party fishing I think it would be a good thing. as for a general cruse boat fishing trip I would be aposed to such an event.
for a privet party weather it is two or fifty too. (family get to gether or company picknic ) this has real good opertunity for every one to go home with a fish. this realy boost moral and can give every one a sence of working as a team. I see tremendous benifits.
for a public fishing boat where every one just shows up and you dont know jack from arnold and you start piling fish in to a cooler. I think this would be devestating to some one who has been there all day and still wanted to fish but could no longer because some one else cought his limit for him. I mean think about it, I could go to the store and baught a fish cheaper than going on a cruse only to have some one else catch my fish for me. and lets face it who wants to go home and get thier picture taken with a fish they did not catch? no one else would know, but I would..... and worst I would remember it for a long time to come.
if I were fishing on a party boat and landed my limit, I would have no problems kicking back and roasting the guys falling behind as I would enjoy the ribbing if I was falling behind. and truthfuly, I think it would be kinda like stealing from some one I dont even know. and where is the sport in that?
so I think with a little tweeking they could come up with a deasent regulation that would fit the needs of every one.

Hey there davetclown,
Another element I didn't mention is that as I go all the time I can catch lots of fish. As I've caught a reasonable number, I usually give these fish to others and sometimes to crew members.
When just a few guys catch an overwhelming percentage of the keeper fish, and are encouraged to keep them by the crew, the guys catching will be put in a spot. Why?
On an Open-party Boat:
1) Do you divide the fish you caught amoung people you don't know, and usually don't even thank someone for fish, just to be a wonderful guy ....... not
2) Will the captain and crew inevitably have a certain say on how the fish are divided...... yep
3) Too many more to mention but there will be problems.

I guess it sounds like we are both in agreance that this rule could be harmfull to the charter fishing industry.
I certainly would not be interested in fishing under those conditions. and I would have to go throug aditional questioning to find out what the rules are for each party boat. (added labor that I would not want to go through)
on a privet charter boat, it would not be so bad because I would be going with people I know.

Hello Guys,
JR, As you know to some degree on certain boats this has always been the case, so its not as big of a deal but I can see were it could create some problems for those slower to get on the fish if not handled sensitively.
Doesn'tt the crew count in the fish count though? I thought they did. If they do that solves some of the problems that might arise because you would have 3 or 4 guys who can count in the limit but don't actually fish. This would givet the boats a bit of margin for error?
One of the good things is that many times guys that are fairly new to the boats are pretty stoked about any fish they catch and won't really fuss to much about other folks biting into thier limit.
I am curious why you say that this is not good for the fishery? Is it a big change?

Hi there theangler,
As usual, you bring a valid and intersting perspective to the issue at hand.
In the Winter season this year and from on now the Calico bass and Sand bass will be the mainstay species for our Los Angeles/Long Beach area fishery.
My position is that, even with the low angler numbers, we can not afford to take boat limits of the fish every trip. Especially if the new guys insist on keeping the breeders!! Are you going to ask a guy that has only caught 3 or 4 fish to return the 1 or 2 breeders that he (invariably) lucked out and caught!
The system until now is based on the fact that half the boat gets their limits and the other do this and that. The commercial fisheries do not specifically target the fish we're going after as the fishery is not that self-sustaining so we're ok their but NOT EVERYONE ever truly gets limits or expects it.
If the boat does get limits don't you think there will be some (unspoken) resentment thought by the newbies that are offered fish for a price?
Don't you think the crew whats 1) income in a lean time, 2) return customers taking fish home?
Here's another fine point. If I give fish to a guy that is too cheap to have it cleaned by the crew (no cleaning fee) do you think the crew is happy about that? If I think about giving fish to strangers,if they approach me, I ask.... are you going to have your fish cleaned? If they say no, no fish! Does that make me the bad guy? NOT!
Still lots of issues here.
