Hello everyone,
The names Curtis also go by CJ. I not so recently moved to Vegas (been here a year next week) from North Dakota. I'm originally from Washington and I'm used to fishing for walleye, SMB, LMB, and occasionally crappie and perch. I'm looking to catch some stripers from the shore and wondering what my best options for lures would be? Or if catching stripers from shore is even really possible out at lake mead? In WA it is illegal to use live bate (other than worms and leaches) so I tend to like to stick with lure baits (its just what I know). I read on some other threads that top water plugs were good in the evening and threadfin shad during the day. What color and size water plugs work well?
I was thinking I would head to to the government wash this weekend and try my luck there or maybe hole 33? If anoyone wants to join me give me a call or text 701-720-7888 or if someone has a boat and wouldnt mind me tagging along I would be down for that as well (will chip in for gas). Thanks in advance for any advice you might have.

Hi CJ, welcome to Nevada BFT.
If you want to increase your chances of hooking up, I suggest bringing some anchovies and/or sardines with you on the first few trips. Chum the area you plan to fish with small pieces of bait to bring the stripers in and soak half and anchovy/sardine on a carolina rig or dropper loop (see sticky... anchovy vs. sardine). If you get a second rod permit, you can soak bait on one rig and throw lures with the other.
Topwater can be great when stripers are boiling, but it is pretty hit and miss if you don't know where the fish are.
Read through the stickies and older posts to get a feel for what works. Good luck and let us know how you do.

See the Whizzle's post in THIS THREAD for an idea of what types of lures can work for you.
Here is the other thread I mentioned, read the whole thing.

Erawk, thanks for the links to the other threads... Where is the best place to buy anchovies and or sardines? I went to Sportsman warehouse off of centennial and looked around but didnt see any... I was in a bit of a rush though and didnt ask if they had any. I did manage to find most of the stuff in Whizzle's thread.

at sportsman's there should be refrigerator in the back with all their bait in it, if its set up like the sportsman's was in Federal Way, WA. <<<that's where I'm from.. but u can also buy anchovies from most wal-marts kinda crappy though, good for chum, there is also a bait and tackle shop on both ways towards the lake one is sandy cove bait shop on Lake mead Blvd, and the other is pro tackle on Lake mead parkway/drive also u can get "food quality" sardines from the international market on Decatur and Tropicana. they seem to last longer cause they are flash frozen. and if u cant find any those places the lake mead marina also has anchovies. I found that out yesterday[fishon]

Welcome to the forum. If you are targeting ONLY Striper come to one of our Striper Club mettings at Bass Pro Shop. We also have a website with lots of post and information.
See the attached newsletter and our next meeting is Thursday 4-12-12 at 7:00 pm upstairs in the (old) fine gun room.
After the meeting is our monthly tournament starts 5pm on friday and ends with the weigh-in at Las Vegas Bay at 12 on Sunday.

Syncityangler: I have been through Feder Way, WA a few times... I try to avoid that side of the state when I visit home though... Too many hippies on that side of the cascades lol. I do miss all the greenery of the NW though. Price wise is Wally world way cheaper to pick up anchovies? How does the bait shops compare to the food market as far as price goes are they pretty close in price?
iamthesmf: I wouldn't say I am ONLY targeting Striper... I would just like to catch a few as I have never caught one before. They don't have striper in the Pacific NW or in North Dakota as far as I'm aware. So, I have never had the opportunity to fish for them. Bass Pro Shop is a LONG drive for me because I live in the far NW part of town (about as NW as you can get and still be in Vegas). Also that weekend I am going to be in Utah. I do appreciate the info though; I may have to try to make it down there for another meeting just to meet some anglers and maybe some fishing buddies.
Thats the thing that sucks about being in the military seems like whenever I start making some fishing buddies, finally start figuring out where the bite is, and what to use, I get moved lol. Oh well, pay is decent.

I wouldn't say that bait is cheaper at wally-world, I know the quality is not so great. but I pay only a few cents more than wal-mart at the local bait and tackle shops but their stuff seems to last longer I got 3 fishing trips (defrosting re-freezing) out of one bag of the stuff from pro tackle on Lake Mead Drive, and I only get maybe one trip on the wal-mart stuff. I'm not sure how much the food grade sardines are but it might actually be cheaper. they always seem to hike the price up for "special use" (fishing bait) stuff. [fishon]
Where is the best place to buy anchovies and or sardines? .
The "best"? Well I guess that's subjective. IamSMF recommends the Asian market in chinatown for sushi grade, flash frozen anchovies. Those would be the "best" quality
Walmarts are the cheapest but they're also the lowest quality. They're usually stuck together and kind of messy. It seems that they might have been allowed to thaw somewhat during transport and get refrozen into a block.
Laker plaza is relatively expensive but the bait is of good quality.
Dry ice will set you back about $6 or so but it can't be beat for keeping bait frozen. Put the dry ice on top of the bait rather than under it. Unless you can put it under and over it.

I agree that the Walmart anchovies are crap. Since I like to fish before sunrise, I stop at the Shell station at Lake Mead Blvd and Los Feliz. You can't miss it, its the last place to stop before heading past Sunrise Mt. They carry good quality frozen anchovy and sardines. The coffee is always hot and fresh and I stop on the way back for the 2 hotdogs for a $1.
Sandy Cove is closed until 7 am. Nice people there and they carry a good variety of tackle. I asked the guy why the late open since they are on the way to the lake. He said it wasn't worth opening early since they were only sell a few bags of frozen bait. It just isn't enough to pay the overhead.
I can keep the anchovies frozen by using two large reusable ice packs with the anchovy in between in a small insulated lunch bag.

I have been getting Sardines from the international market for $1.59 per lb for a few years now and have had great success fishing with them. The price is definitely right (cheaper than anywhere else) and they work great. The quality of these baits are outstanding as well. IQF in prime condition so they are not discolored or stuck together. Hope this helps.

Where is the international market? 1.59 a pound sounds like a decent enough deal to me. I googled international market and It shows it at S Decatur and Tropicana. Is that the same place you are getting this deal? Its kinda outta the way for me if thats the place you are getting them. I find it extremely convenient to grab them on the way to the lake that way they aren't taking up space in my freezer.

Yes. Trop and Decatur is the place. I have a chest freezer so I buy a 50 lb box about 3 times a year. If you want 10 lbs, i will give you them for the same price I paid. PM me and leave your number and we can schedule a pick up. Then you will have bait for a few trips. In the summer, I sometimes use 30 lbs in one weekend. Chumming is key...

That's a big 10-4. Bait time is soon too. The beach will be on fire come early June. In 2010 (June tournament), I caught 200 fish. Only three of them were under 2 lbs. The rest were 3-4. Good times!
