The following is from Don Peay:

We went into D Day this week with 50 Co-sponsors of the Delist wolves from the ESA, I bet there will be more than 100 by noon today.

The BOLD and GUTSY move by Montana Governor Brian Sweitzer who told his fish and game personnel to kill packs of wolves to protect elk herds, to kill the entire pack of wolves if they kill one cow or sheep, and told Game and Fish Personnel NOT to prosecute any landowner from shooting wolves on private property has sent a SHOCK WAVE through Congress – we had already pounded them for two solid days.

So, Victory on this issue is imminent. We must stay focused and win a few more battles, and not relent until final and complete victory is achieved.

Congress must act by Friday night on a Continuing Resolution (CR) by this Friday or the Government Shuts down.

Senator Hatch and Barrasso and Congressman Rheberg, Chaffetz, Bishop, Matheson, Ross, and Congresswoman Lumis had anchored a great position, and had some strong support by Senators Crapo, Risch, Lee, McCain and Kyle.

So, stay tuned.

US Senator Orrin Hatch has been a complete STUD on this issue. Ryan Benson is still in DC working to make sure we get the exact right language in the final bill on wolf delisting, which could be signed by the President within 48 hours.

Ted Lyon, our top tier Texas Trial Attorney put together a very interesting meeting Tuesday night with one of Leader Reid and the Entire Democratic Senate’s Senior advisors.

I called some friends after that meeting and told them, we won. Sweitzer’s bold move, without a doubt will sealed the deal

So, it has been a long road.

Ted Lyon said it best today in DC, “This is a Roosevelt Moment”

Stay tuned.

Thanks to the tens of thousands who really dug in and helped deliver a monumental victory for Conservation.

Ryan Benson and I have been keeping some notes, we are going to write a book about this, if nothing else, It might become a Harvard case study about how to do what most say can’t be done. It will be a fascinating read for all who love wild places and wild things.

In a few hours I have breakfast with Fmr Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney. I spent a couple fun days in December hunting elk with him in Western Montana, it will interesting to see what he thinks about this bold move in leadership.

Dear Members,

I just wanted to let you know that Matt Lumley and I were able to meet with Senator Enzi and Barrasso on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 while in Washington, D.C. attending a National Wolf Delisting Meeting. We thanked them for the efforts and support of H.R.509 and S.249. After meeting with them in the morning, we attended the National Wolf Delisting meeting hosted by U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and several other Congressmen. Representative Lummis and Senator Barrasso were also able to attend the meeting. Ryan Benson reports that a tidal-wave is building for support of this effort, with 50 Congressmen signed on to sponsor these bills. Don Peay told Matt that he is optimistic that we will see something happening very soon. With today's developments in Montana,( [#212126]http://billingsgazette.com/news/state-andregional/montana/article_990c41b4-3a20-11e0-8b81-001cc4c03286.html[/#212126] ) it is starting to appear as though others are starting to understand that something needs to happen and happen soon.

Tomorrow morning, Matt and I will be meeting with Representative Lummis. We are hopeful that we can get some names of potential Congressmen that Rep. Lummis may be able to talk with about joining our efforts from states which are currently absent but whom Matt believes we can swing.

Matt was also able, through some of his connections, to get a Fox News crew to interview many of the key speakers and representatives from several diverse conservation groups united behind Congressional Action to remedy the wolf debacle. Hopefully, we can get some high level exposure as well as some video clips that we can use to get our message out more broadly and in a positive manner.

An interesting statement from David Allen of the RMEF. He stated that the RMEF will not allow Wyoming to be thrown under the bus. The elk foundation has definitely made some significant movements and I would suggest that those individuals which desire to contact the RMEF and express appreciation for their efforts in this effort.

Thanks again for all of your efforts and support. I truly believe we are going to deliver on this when many have given up. I hope that you can express my appreciation to our members from your respective communities. Without all of their hard, volunteer efforts and labor, I would not be able to be here fighting this critical battle in their behalf.

Respectfully submitted,

I hope that stuff is true, but I won't believe it until we have a hunting season again or even better, no wolves.

The following is from Don Peay:

This situation changes hourly.

It looks now as if wolf delisting may not happen because MORE AND MORE states want to prevent this disaster from coming to their state. And they don’t want to just let TWO states, Idaho and Montana off the hook. Or just four states, or five states to be delisted.

Or, in the case of the upper Midwest, they have been promised to delist for 20 plus years and have ZERO confidence it will happen without Congressional Action.

Amidst all this, there are tons of rumors and innuendos. They cut this deal, this guy said that, etc, etc. etc. TRUST us a little bit, till we have violated trust.

Just remember, one year ago, many sportsmen leaders said Congress would never do this. They will because they are hearing the power of the Sportsman Voice, and the Voice of Freedom and Liberty.

OUR POSITION STRENGTHENS EACH DAY, so we are [b]not cutting a Deal now, we want more states, not less. We want it for EACH state.

The Idaho Montana solution only will not pass, because Senators and Congressman from 20 plus other states, and growing daily, want all states done, not just two. Also, the propsed delist of these two states was a mother may I, not take care of business bill. So, why pass a bad bill ?

Some democrats – Boxer of CA doesn’t want any wolves delisted ever, apparently. It does not seem smart to me to make 10 million hunters mad, madder each day.

So, until the fire burns so hot in many Senators states like Iowa, Minnesota, Colorado, New Mexico, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, Virginia, West Virginia, etc, etc, etc, a few like Boxer holds out.

At some point, Many Democratic Senators will say, NOPE, can’t wait any longer, fire is too hot, Boxer, don’t care if you are the Chairwoman of the Resource Committee, you lose.

So, if you have a Democratic US Senator, please email them and ask them to support the S. 249 Hatch Bill, and officially co-sponsor.

Montana does not need to be delisted – Their Governor strapped on a pair and said to hell with the Feds, go kill lots of wolves, packs of wolves. Google Governor Sweitzer wolves, lots of news.

So, fellow sportsmen, Ranchers, and Business owners, just know, we have BROUGHT this to the forefront of the Attention of the US CONGRESS.

WE have a plan, we know what we are doing. WE are preparing a tactical nuclear strike, speaking metaphorically, if this issue isn’t solved soon.

There are plenty of enemies out there, we are not giving out our plan, just help us grow that Red map of sponsors and co-sponsors, each day.

We haven’t had time to update the sponsor map, we will soon, this weekend, as Congress recesses tomorrow.

WE ARE WINNING. I predict within 60 days.

The Enviros counter – Sue the Feds today and demand wolves are everywhere, and challenge the “legacy” of the Governor. Sweitzer could come to Republican states today and win election, and maybe some Republican Governors need to strap on a pair and follow Governor Sweitzers lead.

We will keep you posted as we can. It is CHAOS, minute by minute.

Once again, we have the Science, the biology, the economics, the politics, the wildlife on our side. We will not quit. We will not cut a bad deal. We will accept a deal if we get 95% of what is right. Till then, picking up support day by day.

Thanks

[#0000ff]The following is from Bob Wharff:[/#0000ff]

Dear Members,

Today, Matt Lumley and I were able to meet with Representative Lummis. Matt has been working with several of his contacts to line up potential sponsors from the Midwest which currently are not engaged in Congressional Action.

After speaking with Rep. Lummis, we learned that she was going to be introducing legislation to stop the Equal Access to Justice Act (EAJA) funding. For those which may not know or remember, the EAJA is the vehicle in which many environmental groups have been suing the US Government and banking millions of tax payer dollars. Matt & I were able to watch from the House Gallery as Representative Lummis introduced amendment 195 which halts funding to the EAJA. It is to force the Government to start providing some level of accountability over this program. The left came after this pretty hard but the amendment was passed comfortably. I am told that in a few days they will be bringing forward some language for us to review in order to help reform the EAJA.

As you can see from Don's email, things can swing rather abruptly. We were able to end the evening by visiting with Brian Clifford of Senator Barrasso's office, where we talked about strategy for achieving our objective of restoring wolf management authority to all states, not just a select few. WY SFW strongly supports the decision to remain focused on the big picture and the goal of restoring 10th amendment rights bestowed upon the states to all the states. We must remain vigilant and steadfast in our resolve to protect our North American Model of Wildlife Management from the threat of uncontrolled and continual expansion of large predator populations.

Thanks again to all for their support of our efforts. Your emails and phone calls definitely make a huge difference in the successful outcome and make it possible for me to achieve WY SFW's goals and objectives.

It takes the voices of the people and strong organizations to get this pushed thru Congress, no sense laying back and bitching about it but not doing anything. I would just as soon kill everyone of the damn wolves. We are starting to get them here in Utah as well, won't be long and we will be in the same shape as Idaho and Montana with our elk and deer herds. [:/]

I agree with everything you've said, I just don't believe they will be able to push it through. The tree huggin, greenie, dirt worshipers have too much power in high places.
