my first fish on my new flyrod.
#1
Well I picked up a new rod last spring, a #12 Bass Pro blow out special...

glad I got it, I realy doubt my #8 would have survived the strain I put on the new one this week.

What is little known is that michigan has a few fish to target worthy of a flyrod of this gage.

I had gone twice looking for trout and realized the reason I was getting out manovered by the trout is because I hadnt taken my new rod and reel with me. Oh ya, my new reel was a Gandermountain blow out special as well...

here is a pic of the rainbow I picked up tuesday and wensday this week.

I would like to say I caught them on some fancy home made fly, but honestly I havent the skill or the patients to make quality flies.

no to say the truth, I used a peice of green yarn on a number 4 circle hook for the one in the top pic and spawn for the other two a day later.

[Image: happy.gif][#008000]Way to go Dave. Makes all the fish that I caught this year look like frys. Green yarn on a circle hook - now that is wild. Just goes to show that if the fish are hungry - LOOK OUT![/#008000]

let me add a little explanation on the yarn idea..just so everybody can better understand...you tie a sneel knot on the hook..then you push the knot back on the hook..then you put the yarn in the space between the knot and the eye of the hook...between the line and hook...then you pull the snell knot back up to the eye of the hook to hold yarn tite..then you take the sciccors and trim it up so its round like a yarnball fly..egg imitation...if you wanto change collors you just push the sneel knot back again and put in different collor..then trim..just a thourough explanation of how its used

okay.the pics just taken on camera phone..not great but shouold offer explanation...first pic is just the snell knot...second pic is the snell knot pushed back with space to put yarn....third pic is the yarn put in and snell knot pulled back up yight holding yarn..fourth pic is the finished product with the yarn trimmed up to look like an egg pattern..i accidentlly got two of the same pic on the third one..itllwork..get back with me with questions..hopefully this explains it

even though the pictures are blurry I get a general idea of what you are talking about.. but Im still not sure how the yarn stays on the hook... I understand the knot holds it in place but what is hold the yarn on the hook???

WHEN YOU PULL THE SNELL KNOT BACK UP TO THE EYE OF THE HOOK.. IT PINCHES THE YARN BETWEEN THE KNOT AND THE EYE OF THE HOOK..HOLDS IT TIGHT WONT COME OUT

that my friend is the Sad part, I went after the kings because they were in, all I kept comming up with was Crome. [angelic]

every one else around me was pulling in kings...

the runs were real slow there where I was a couple weeks ago because the water level was so low, At that time I was there was when the world record Brown was caught.. I still keep thinging how close I was to being the one to hook on to that bruit... [:p]

the incoming cold rains is what realy turned the fisn on and get them up the river, that and the gill nets were removed from the egg harvesters... lol [:/]

any way it was a lot of fun, and I look forward to next year.

I thought it might be good to clue in new readers the benifit of yarn over yarn balls. aside from what you already mentioned

1. Yarn dosnt have the core of a yarn ball
2. If your hook is floating to low on the river bottom you can add more yarn to it to get the boyancy up to keep the hook from grabbing up stones and in the case of michigan waters away from zebra mussles.

them peskey mussles grab a hold of hooks like vices.

i agree..you can ajust how high or low the hook runs just by adding or taking away yarn..kinda nice..glad you added that
