Rain sleet or snow
#1
After almost 2 weeks, I've finally caught a lucky break and I have a chance to go fishing tomorrow. I don't care if it's raining or we get a foot of snow I'm going to wet a line tomorrow!

No word on fishing conditions here on the Grand River. Like the rest of the state we've been getting pounded with snow. I heard tail of an ice dam blocking water upstream from the dam causing basements flooding in some shoreline homes so not sure what to expect. Hopefully the water above the dam is frozen and I won't have to dodge the big ice flows breaking over the dam.

Full report tomorrow night.

Not for me , we are still being hammered on by the storm . I just looked outside and the lil' ladys impalla looks like a snowdrift .
The 20 minute drive home took a little longer than I expected , just over an hour today .

As far as fishing , you using the cork again ?
I used to have a connection on a bobber company but it's on the old computers hard drive . European floats , they look pretty sweet for detecting ultra light hits . they are tapered pencil floats , hundreds of styles to choose from . I have to find the link again before spring .

OK... fishing report for my rain sleet or snow adventure as promised.

I had planned on going to the 6th street dam on the Grand River to hunt for steelhead..... but..... I got a hot tip from a friend and I ended up in the Rabbit River in Middleville targeting walleye instead.

Weather wasn't to bad and while water levels were a bit high it was far easier fishing than fishing the Grand River. Took the little wifey along (she took the pictures).

Spent some time using wax worms with no luck. Switched to pink jigs with a small GULP leech and that got the bluegills interested. Caught 5 gills in a matter of 8 minutes. One was pretty nice size. About a 2 pounder.

This is the part where Dave will think I"m crazy [Wink]-- We had a birthday party to go to right after fishing so I didn't keep them.

The hits quit just as fast as it started and seemed like once I sore liped the 5 of them they got wize to me and left.

After about another 30 minutes we were just about to call it quits when I got a nice strike. The fish peeled off a good 30 yards of line on me in a couple seconds (forgot to tighten it back up after pullin in the little gills) You can't really see it well from the pic but the rod bent over pretty good.

After a couple minutes I saw a big yellow belly roll out in front of me. (Ooooh Yeah... Walleye tonight !!!) and then without so much as a warning out pops the hook and line goes slack. SUN OF A PUPPY DOG !!!

So no walleye dinner but all in all we had a great time. I got my fix and got rid of the havn't been fishing withdrawls and the wifey got some great pictures of the dam and ice and snow buildup along the river banks.

ps... my buddy claims he went 2 for 4 (walleyes) in that same spot few days ago. Said they were just barely legal. (knowing him he probably stepped on them in order to make em legal)

Now that's what I'm talking about !
Real great fishing report , best one I've seen from anybody in a long time !!!!
I don't know if I can get out this weekend to wet a line or not , I have my little sidekick nursing the broken sholder (into day four ).
It breaks my heart to see her in all this pain and I know she was looking forward to some time on the ice before getting her steelhead fix in during the upcomming big run .

Where is middleville located at ?

Middlevile is down here by me. About 20 minutes from my house just south of Grand Rapids.

The rabbit river has all kinds of fish in it. That particular spot near the dam is a great spot for the smallies and browns. It's a bit shallow for walleyes during summer but they do make a run up it in the winter and early spring. That is as far as they can get because of the dam. Its a really good spot with lots of gravel banks and drop offs. It's a good spring sucker hold as well.
