Best Fish To Catch
#1
I know this question has none of the enlighting ice fishing information I have provided in past. Since the ice is gone and my early foray into the N Slope was less than sucsessful I feel left out. So here it is, what is the best fighting fish you've ever caught? I know this has been asked in the past but, with all the new members since I've been gone I thought some fresh imput might be nice. I'm not talking about line class stuff either. What is the badest fish, no matter what the size you have ever landed, or even had on and lost? The IFG votes Amberjack. Not the pussy Mossbacks (Yellowtail) off Baja either. Real North American Amberjack found only in the Atlantic. Who's with me? If anybody answers Walleye, the Llamas will come looking for you!

I don't know if Carp really qualify, but I landed one that weighed in at almost 30 lbs. I use 6lb Stren so it was a pretty good fight.I like fishing for carp because they do put up a good fight. My second best is wiper.

Some of the best fights I've had were with 18-20" whitefish on a fly rod--they love to run. Also a 10-pound carp on a 5.5' light weight spinning rod.

What have you done IFG, you have surely opened up a huge can of worms with this question. For those of us that don't fish salt water, my vote of course goes to The Mighty Wiper.
Second would be the smallmouth. Carp when they are huge can fight because of the size but I have yet to catch a two or three pound carp that can rip line off your reel like a wiper. But of course everyone has their opinion and I think we will hear a lot of different ones on this subject. WH2

[cool]I have been blessed to fish throughout the US and Mexico, for a whole bunch of species...fresh and salt water. For pound for pound slugging ability, I would vote for the "lowly" triggerfish...scourge of anglers fishing for more exotic species in the inshore waters of the Sea of Cortez. An average two pounder can pop ten pound line if you don't have your drag set.

For a combination of beauty, flashiness and sheer fighting ability, I think I might say west coast steelhead (rainbows). Perhaps the most memorable fish I ever had hooked was a steelhead about six or seven pounds, in the American River, above Sacramento. It grabbed my glowbug fly, at the end of a long cast and jumped three times...so fast that it almost looked like three separate fish. Each jump was several feet from the last one, with the chrome bright steelie coming clear out of the water on each jump.

I so enjoyed the show that I lowered my rod, gave the fish some slack and allowed a "long line release". That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. Actually I simply forgot I was a part of the program and blew it. I remember my knees trembling in excitement for several minutes afterward. But, I snapped a lifetime picture in my mind.

I have to vote for wipers also. I have cought some hard fighting white fish on a flyrod and have cought several species of salmon in alaska and oregon. But i hooked a big wiper last year at willard that i would rate up there with any of the others.

I vote with Emu Scud!!!! Pound for pound, the lowly blue gill, especially out of Pelican is the king!!!! Can you imagine a 3 lb or 20 lb blue gill???? Can't argue with Tube Dude but for fresh water it's the blue gill!!! His body design is perfect to resist fighting him side ways. And he doesn't stop even full of parasites!! Leave it to me to throw out a divergent/unpopular opinion. Both the Wiper and small mouth are up there but they fight differently and have good body design.

I have never caught a Wiper, so I would have to say Bluegill are the toughest fish to bring in, pound for pound of course. [Tongue]

It's tough to compare a salt water fish to a fresh water even if you include salmon and steal head with freshwater fish. I've caught a lot of big fish but the best is 5 pound brookies.

[Smile]i think that the hardest fighting fish to catch is a big mac from the gorge. THAT BIG MAC ISN'T THE ONE YOU GET A McDONALDS WITH CHEESE[laugh] I caught a 26lb. (40 INCH) mac on 8lb stren ice fishing and had one on for four hours and was only able to get that fish 20 feet off the bottom before it decided to spit the hook. also wipers and some huge florida largemouth bass are right in there for the pick of the hardest fighting fish that i have caught

GOOD LUCK FISHING

You Guys sure do love the Wipers here. Since Willard almost never frezzes I've never caught one. I do love to catch Stripers tought. If Wipers fight as hard as Stripers I can see why they have so many fans. Here is a picture of a nice Striper I caught in Lake Texoma March of 99.
