Dog flies

Anyone ever try tying fishing flies with dog hair? I have 2 big mutt dogs that are always shedding. I've never really ever heard of people doing that. I mean you can use deer hair squirel and feathers so why wouldn't dog hair work? I don't know... guess I'll have to try it. Thoughts?

Yes we have , a couple years ago on the flyfishing forum a bunch of us were trying out all kinds of hair .

My labs hair held up rather well worked great as a crown on wolley buggers . My lab also was suspect of having mange untill the wife cought on , lol !

Skunk tail and possum both did exceptional . Squirrle tails are a staple for wolley buggers , easy to work with too !
Deer fur (save your tail this year []) worked great on floating flies , regular cape hair was very good for making crowns, legs and feelers for terrestrials and crustaceans .

turkey and grouse feathers were indispensable when tieing a beetle . Turkey feathers by themselves make the best sucker fishing fly I have ever used .

Forgot to add ,out of some other spur of the moment materials used , bubblegum !
a small piece can be used to roll up a salmon egg , spearmint gum makes a good grub , Jucy fruit works for catfish and carp .

I'm newbie when it comes to fly tying experience. Wife kept beating me up for buying the things (They're Expensive !!!) so thought I could make them myself cheaper and hopefully better.

Thanks for the insight on materials. I'll be tying (or trying []) a lot of different material combinations over the winter I'm sure.

sibarian husky hair was a bust, lots of fur, but soft as down, holds together ok, just every thing you tie when it hits the water looks like a wet streamer...

how ever beards work real well....[]

One thing i did learn was not to skimp on hooks , southbend hooks well , lived up to their name .
the hooks bent and the fish headed south , LOL !
